- Tadeusz Zygfryd Kassern (* 19. März 1904 in Lemberg; † 2. Mai 1957 in New York City) war ein polnischer Komponist. Kassern war am Konservatorium der Polnischen Musikgesellschaft in Lemberg Klavierschüler von und studierte Komposition bei Mieczysław Sołtys. Von 1922 bis 1926 setzte er seine Ausbildung am Posener Konservatorium bei Henryk Opieński (Komposition) und (Klavier) fort. Daneben studierte er Jura an der Universität Posen. Bis 1931 lebte er in Paris, danach war er bis 1939 Mitarbeiter der Staatsanwaltschaft Polen. In dieser Zeit schrieb er neben seiner Arbeit als Komponist Musikrezensionen von den Nowy Kurier (1929–33) und den Dziennik Poznański (1934–38). 1939 wurde er nach Lemberg evakuiert, und an 1940 arbeitete er in der Krakauer Buchhandlung Gebethner und Wolff. Wegen seiner jüdischen Herkunft tauchte er 1942 in Warschau als Teodor Sroczyński und nach dem Warschauer Aufstand in Zakopane unter. 1945 wurde Kassern polnischer Kulturatteché in New York, 1948 wurde er Konsul und Delegierter für kulturelle Angelegenheiten bei den Vereinten Nationen. Ende 1948 schied er aus dem diplomatischen Dienst aus und beschloss, in den Vereinigten Staaten zu bleiben. 1956 erhielt er ein ständiges Aufenthaltsvisum. Bis zu seinem Tod unterrichtete er Klavier und Musiktheorie an der Third Street Music School, dem Jaques-Dalcroze Institute und der New School for Social Research. (de)
- Tadeusz Zygfryd Kassern (Lemberg, Austro-Hungarian Empire, 19 March 1904 – New York City (United States), 2 May 1957) was a Polish composer of Jewish origin. Born in Lemburg, he studied at the conservatory of the Polish Music Society in Lviv and later at the conservatory in Poznań. He studied composition with Mieczysław Sołtys and piano with . In addition, he had a law degree from the University of Poznan. During the war, Kassern lived in Lviv, Cracow and Warsaw. In the Nazi occupied parts of Poland Kassern was using false identity papers to protect himself from the Gestapo. In the post-war years, he served as a cultural attaché in New York to the new Polish government. In 1948 Kassern, after a brief visit to the communist-ruled Poland, suddenly resigned his position, renounced his Polish citizenship and applied for US asylum. Kassern's application for asylum was denied due to missing a deadline set for asylum seekers; depressed, he attempted suicide. He worked for the Third Street Music School Settlement and the Dalcroze School of Music in New York City. Among his compositions are three operas, symphonic suite "Tatry", solo concertos for flute, piano, oboe and double bass, cantatas, songs with piano accompaniment, and several solo piano works. Kassern died of cancer in 1957. Among Kassern's well known students was the Italian-born American composer Dalmazio Santini (1923-2001). (en)
