- Die Bezeichnung Standard Eight verwendete die britische Standard Motor Company in Coventry von 1922 bis 1959 vier mal mit Unterbrechungen für verschiedene Typen kleiner PKW. Der erste 8 hp war ein kleiner Tourenwagen mit oben gesteuertem Vierzylindermotor und wurde 1922/1923 gebaut. Ab 1938 gab es den Flying Eight. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg liefen die „Flying“-Serien aus, aber 1945 erschien ein Kleinwagen, der wieder 8 hp genannt wurde. 1953 kam ein komplett neues Auto namens Standard Eight heraus, das fast keine Gemeinsamkeiten mit seinen Vorgängern hatte. 1959 wurde die Fertigung dieses Wagens eingestellt und stattdessen der Triumph Herald angeboten; die Marke Standard wurde aufgegeben. - The Standard Eight is a small car produced by the British Standard Motor Company from 1938 to 1959. The car was originally launched in 1938 as the Flying Eight. After the Second World War the Flying range of Standards was dropped but an updated car called the 8 hp was re-introduced in 1945. In 1953 a completely new car, the Standard Eight was launched sharing virtually nothing with its predecessor. In 1959 the car was dropped to be replaced by the Triumph Herald, as the Standard brand was being phased out. (en)
