The English title refers to Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong while the French title starts with "La récidive", which refers to the central argument that Mao's seizure of power was patterned off of Stalin's. O. E. Westad of Yale University stated that "the recurrence" and "the repeat offense" are two possible translations of "La récidive". (en)
