- St. Francis Bay (afrikaans: St. Francisbaai) ist ein Ort in der Provinz Ostkap in Südafrika. 2011 hatte er 4933 Einwohner. Der Ort liegt an der Garden Route zwischen Knysna und Port Elizabeth. Die Nationalstraße N2 verläuft rund 20 Kilometer nördlich. St. Francis Bay gehört zur Gemeinde Kouga im Distrikt Sarah Baartman. Ursprünglich wohnten in diesem Gebiet Khoikhoi. Der erste Europäer in der St. Francis Bay war im Jahre 1537 Diogo Pereira Botelho. Im Jahr 1575 gab der portugiesische Entdecker Manuel de Mesquita Perestrello der St. Francis Bay ihren Namen nach dem Kloster in seiner Heimatstadt Santarém. 1765 siedelten die ersten Voortrekker in der Bucht. St. Francis Bay gilt als Wassersportparadies. Der vier Kilometer lange Strand bietet hervorragende Bedingungen für das Surfen. Von August bis Oktober kann man hier Wale beobachten. St. Francis Bay durchquert ein acht Kilometer langes Kanalsystem des Kromme River. Die Temperaturen liegen zwischen 12 °C im Winter und 30 °C im Sommer. Das Kap St. Francis befindet sich zehn Kilometer südlich von St. Francis Bay. Der dortige Leuchtturm wurde 1878 vollendet. Er ist der höchste Leuchtturm Südafrikas und wurde als historisches Gebäude unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. Daneben befindet sich eine Wetterstation sowie eine Aufzuchtstation für Brillenpinguine. (de)
- St Francis Bay (Afrikaans: St Francisbaai) is a holiday town in Sarah Baartman District Municipality in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, roughly one hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth. On 11 November 2012 a fire destroyed 76 homes, almost all of them thatched roofed. The building style of the village section of St Francis Bay includes white painted houses with black roofs (mostly thatch) on the canals or around the golf course, or a Mediterranean building style in Santareme and Port St Francis. The Kromme River is navigable for 14 km upstream, and is linked to the St Francis canals system. Whales can be spotted in the Bay from May to late October and dolphins can be seen daily on their way back and forth between the bays of Cape St Francis and Jeffrey’s Bay. The Cape clawless otter is also ever present, frolicking in the waves and rock pools around Port St Francis and at Otters Landing. Bird life is abundant with over 200 species recorded in the area including the rare African oystercatcher and fish eagle. Port St Francis includes a commercial and recreational harbour, built to host the squid industry freezing vessels, as well as a small harbour resort village. It lies in a sheltered nook of the bay and provides a safe anchorage for the boats, pleasure craft, and oceangoing yachts. St Francis Field is an airpark close to the Port that caters for those who wish to fly in. Cape St Francis, a rustic fishing village, sits adjacent to St Francis Bay. Popular for surfing at Seal Point, its beautiful stretch of beach and the historic lighthouse, built in 1878. Walking trails wind along the rocky coast, through the Irma Booysen Floral Reserve, and along the Cape St Francis point links it to the village of St Francis Bay. Cape St Francis is 8 km from Thyspunt, which was a preferred site for South Africa's next nuclear power station there is also a township known as Sea Visa where most of the black Africans and coloured people live. Het ligt aan de Indische Oceaan, vlak bij de monding van de Kromrivier. St Francisbaai is een vrij nieuw dorp met 5.000 inwoners, dat uit verschillende boerderijen is ontstaan. Het dorp is verdeeld in zes locaties: het oorspronkelijk deel, dat exclusief uit witte huizen met rieten daken bestaat, Santareme, het gedeelte met een Toscaans-/Spaansachtige stijl, het havengebied, de kaap, de kanalen en Sea Vista, een krottenwijk waar de meeste kleurlingen en zwarte bewoners verblijven. Voordat de Europeanen zich er vestigden, werd het gebied bewoond door de Khoi. De naam is afkomstig van de Portugese ontdekkingsreiziger Manuel de Perestrelo die in 1575 St Francisbaai zijn naam gaf. In Santereme zijn enkele San-skeletten gevonden. Deze skeletten zijn ongeveer 5000 jaar oud. Het dorp is ontstaan rond 1950. De Portugese invloeden zijn tot een minimum beperkt gebleven, het enige wat nog aan Portugal en het Middellandse Zeegebied doet denken zijn de Spaans- en Portugeesachtige straatnamen en bouwstijl in Santareme. is een afzonderlijk dorp dat vaak tot St Francisbaai gerekend wordt. Vroeger heette het Kaap Serras. Het werd eveneens ontdekt door Manuelo de Perestrelo. Het is een plek waar veel surfers komen. (nl)
