- Els Songye són un grup ètnic del República Democràtica del Congo (anteriorment Zaire), que habiten a la província de al llarg de les dues ribes del Riu Lualaba. El 1985 es calculava que els Songye eren entre 150.000 i 217.000. El Songye són dividits en subgrups que són sota el govern d'un cap central conegut com a Yakitenge. - The Songye people, sometimes written Songe, are a Bantu ethnic group from the central Democratic Republic of the Congo. They inhabit a vast territory between the Sankuru and Lubilash rivers in the west and the Lualaba River in the east. Many Songye villages can be found in present-day East Kasai province, parts of Katanga and Kivu Province. The people of Songye are divided into thirty-four conglomerate societies; each society is led by a single chief with a Judiciary Council of elders and nobles (bilolo). Smaller kingdoms east of the Lomami River refer to themselves as Songye, other kingdoms in the west, refer to themselves as Kalebwe, Eki, Ilande, Bala, Chofwe, Sanga and Tempa. As a society, the people of Songye are mainly known as a farming community; they do, however, take part in hunting and trading with other neighboring communities. (en)

In 1985 werd een schatting gemaakt dat het volk 150.000 tot 217.000 mensen bedroeg. De Songye zijn onderverdeeld in subgroepen, die onder het leiderschap staan van een centrale leider, de Yakitenge. Het lokale bestuur is in handen van leiders die Sultani Ya Muti genoemd worden. De economie van de Songye is gebaseerd op landbouw en veeteelt. Net als de Luba zijn de Songye bekende houtsnijders, die bekendstaan om het maken van ceremoniële maskers (zie de afbeelding), figuren en overige ceremoniële objecten. (nl)
