Il s'agit à l'origine de deux collections réunies par l'empereur cloîtré Go-Shirakawa : le Kashishū (歌詞集) et le Kudenshū (口伝集.) Seul un fragment d'environ 10 % de l’œuvre nous est parvenu. - El Ryōjin hishō (梁塵秘抄, La danza del polvo ) es una antología de cantos de fe y amor llamados imayo (estilo de hoy día) 今様, que apareció en la segunda mitad del siglo XII, hacia finales del período Heian (794-1192). Es al Emperador Go-Shirakawa (1127-1192) a quien debemos la supervivencia de aquellos cantos, aunque hoy en día tristemente en número reducido. Go-Shirakawa, en su juventud, buscó fervorosamente la compañía de las asobi ―músicas itinerantes al estilo de las gitanas― invitándolas al Palacio Imperial, y convirtiéndose en un coleccionista asiduo de sus cantos. Acumuló una colección de miles de ellos, los cuales ordenó en veinte volúmenes, con notas extensas sobre su estilo de interpretación y, probablemente notas musicales. Hoy en día solamente sobreviven 566 cantos ―es decir, el libro segundo, con fragmentos del primero―. Siglos después, los cantos siguen resonando con espontaneidad y poder espiritual convincente, apelando directamente a nuestra moderna sensibilidad. En el Ryojin-hisho encontramos un prolífico mundo de sacerdotes y prostitutas, labradores y cazadores, jugadores y chismosos, trabajadores y parias, viejos y niños, cuyas voces son a veces intercambiables.
