Sie entstand 1948 als Abspaltung der sozialistischen Fraktion des Indischen Nationalkongresses. In den Jahren ihrer Existenz war sie die wichtigste Oppositionspartei gegenüber dem Indischen Nationalkongress unter Jawaharlal Nehru.
