- Sign of the Times est le quatrième album du groupe The Rubettes sorti en juin 1976. Il est le premier album du groupe sans l'équipe formée par Tony Waddington et Wayne Bickerton. Il est produit par Alan Blakley, ancien membre des Tremoloes, un groupe dont Mick Clarke a fait partie pendant huit mois. Il contient les titres phares You're the Reason Why et Julia. Après le départ de Bill Hurd, c'est Tony Thorpe qui assure les claviers mais Bill Hurd a bien participé au titre Julia, il en assure par ailleurs la promotion avec le groupe. La plupart des chansons sont écrites par Alan Williams et John Richardson, en revanche Dancing In The Rain est écrite par Mike Gower qui avait fait partie du groupe The Medium aux côtés d'Alan Williams et John Richardson, elle a des accents funky et jazzy. Avec cet album, le groupe abandonne le doo wop et cherche son style. Sign Of The Times et You're the Reason Why, chantées par Tony Thorpe ainsi que Julia interprétée par Alan Williams ont une sonorité rock, Not Now My Dear, interprétée par John Richardson est dans le style country. You're The Only Girl On My Island et I Really Got To Know sont des ballades, la première interprétée par John Richardson, la seconde interprétée en duo par Alan Williams et John Richardson. I Think I'm In Love comporte de nombreux passages a cappella. Le groupe admet qu'après avoir retrouvé leur indépendance, il n'est pas vraiment prêt à se laisser guider par leur nouveau producteur et ne lui laisse pas le contrôle. La pochette du disque est un déssin qui représente les quatre membres restants du groupe, dans une voiture, laissant loin derrière eux de minuscules personnages. (fr)
- Sign of the Times is the fourth studio album by the English band The Rubettes. It was released on the State Records label in June 1976. The album represented a significant change in direction for the band, as it was the first not produced by Wayne Bickerton and Tony Waddington – instead the Rubettes took on production responsibilities themselves, with Alan Blakley (formerly of the Tremeloes) as co-producer. The band made the decision due to the disappointing sales of their previous two Bickerton/Waddington singles and the desire to forge new musical directions. The Rubettes were a four-piece band by the time Sign of the Times was recorded, as keyboardist Bill Hurd departed earlier in 1976. Tony Thorpe took over keyboard duties in the studio. The album contained two singles, both released in advance – the only UK single release "You're The Reason Why" and the non-UK A-side "Julia". In 1992, Dice Records (France) released the Rubettes' third and fourth albums (Rubettes and Sign of the Times) as a double CD set. In 2012 Cherry Red Records issued the album on CD. In 2015, Caroline Records released the album Sign of the Times, with two bonus tracks, as part of a box CD set of the Rubettes' first five studio albums. (en)
