C'est le premier véritable album studio de Gong depuis Shamal en 1975 si l'on ne compte pas Gazeuse! et Expresso II, sorti par contrat sous le nom de Gong mais plutôt joués par le Pierre Moerlen's Gong. Après l'album Gong maison, le groupe se rapproche un peu plus de la formation originale avec l'arrivée de Pip Pyle (batteur original de Gong 1971-1972) et Keith Bailey (bassiste de Here & Now et de Planet Gong). Shapeshifter est d'ailleurs la suite des aventures de Zero the hero après la trilogie Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg et You soit Radio Gnome Invisible Part 4. « Dans l'épisode quatre de l'album Shapeshifter (1992), Zéro rencontre un chaman urbain qui accepte de le mener au prochain niveau de conscience à condition que Zéro passe neuf mois dans un avion, voyage où il veut, mais sans utiliser de l'argent et en ne mangeant rien d' autre que de la nourriture d'avion. - Shapeshifter is the ninth studio album released under the name Gong and the sixth album by the Daevid Allen version of the group. It was released in 1992. It is the first proper album from Daevid Allen's Gong since You from 1974. It is the first album from the original group without founding member Gilli Smyth. Didier Malherbe and Allen are the only two returning performers from the previous album. Pip Pyle, who performed on Continental Circus and Camembert Electrique also returns. With main character Zero the hero, the album continues the Gong mythology, the central part of which was formed with the Radio Gnome Trilogy of albums, comprising Flying Teapot in 1973, followed by Angel's Egg, 1973, and You in 1974. In episode four in the album Shapeshifter (1992), Zero meets an urban shaman who agrees to take Zero to the next level of awareness on the proviso that Zero spends nine months on an airplane, travelling where he wants but not using money or eating anything other than airline food. - Shapeshifter è il settimo album dei Gong, pubblicato per la prima volta in Francia dalla Celluloid Records nel 1992. È il primo lavoro dei Gong registrato in studio con la partecipazione del fondatore Daevid Allen dai tempi di You, il terzo disco della "Trilogia di Radio Gnome Invisible", del 1974. Negli album che erano seguiti a You, il leader del gruppo era diventato il batterista Pierre Moerlen e con diverse formazioni i Gong avevano inciso ancora tre album, l'ultimo dei quali è stato Express II del 1978. Il profondo cambio di sonorità di questi album rispetto ai precedenti e conflitti interni alla band portarono Moerlen a staccarsi dal poco che rimaneva dei Gong originali e rifondare nel 1979 una propria band dal nome Pierre Moerlen's Gong.
