- Shadow marks (shadow relief) are a form of archaeological feature visible from the air. Unlike cropmarks, and soil marks they require upstanding features to work and are therefore more commonly seen in the context of extant sites rather than previously undiscovered buried ones. They are caused by the differences in height on the ground produced by archaeological remains. In the case of ancient, eroded earthworks these differences are often small and they are most apparent when viewed from the air, when the sun is low in the sky. This causes long shadows to be cast by the higher features, which are illuminated from one side by the sun, with dark shadows marking hollows and depressions. Artificial shadow marks can be created easily by constructing a virtual model of a site by merging aerial images (Photogrammetry) and then vectoring in a virtual light source from any direction and at any angle. - Con Shadow marks (in italiano si potrebbe tradurre con segni d'ombra o linee d'ombra) s'intende una forma di feature (caratteristica) archeologica visibile dall'alto. Diversamente dai cropmarks, e soil marks, esse richiedono caratteristiche (features) fisse per manifestarsi e sono dunque più comunemente viste nel contesto di siti esistenti piuttosto che in quelli sconosciuti sepolti precedentemente. Esse sono causate dalle dislivelli del suolo prodotti dai resti archeologici. Nel caso di scavi di siti antichi, erosi, queste differenze sono spesso piccole, mentre sono più visibili quando vengono osservate dall'alto, oppure quando il sole è basso all'orizzonte. Questo provoca la formazione di ombre lunghe che vengono lanciate dalle feature più alte, illuminate così dal sole da un lato, mentre le ombre scure marcano cavità e depressioni. Le shadow marks possono essere meglio osservate obliquamente piuttosto che direttamente dall'alto, poiché in questo modo si viene ad enfatizzare l'effetto delle ombre. (it)
