À la mort de Tancrède en 1041, il hérite (?) du fief de Hauteville et reste dans le duché normand à la différence de la quasi-totalité de ses douze frères et demi-frères, exilés volontairement en Italie méridionale. Considéré comme un guerrier de grande valeur, il sert le duc Robert le Magnifique qui l'apprécie beaucoup. Il est banni du duché de Normandie durant trois ans, pour avoir tué un voisin qui l'aurait injurié. L'un de ses fils du même nom, Serlon, qui semble avoir hérité des qualités guerrières de son père, tenta l'aventure en Méditerranée. On le retrouve en Sicile dans les années 1060 aux côtés de son oncle Roger Bosso, combattant les musulmans et les pirates Sarrasins de Tamim ben al-Muizz et de Benavert. (fr)

Born before 1010, he was the eldest son of Tancred's to remain in Normandy. After a dispute with a neighbour (a man of the court of Robert I, duke of Normandy), whom he killed over an insult, Serlo was exiled for three years. Around 1041, his father died and he inherited the small fief of Hauteville in the Cotentin and the sirery of Pirou through his wife. He was regarded, as were his brothers, as an exceptional warrior. Around 1056, his son Serlo followed his half-brother Roger to the Mezzogiorno and made his fortunes there. (en)

Na een geschil met een buurman, (een man aan het hof van Robert, hertog van Normandië), die hij doodde na een belediging, werd hij 3 jaar verbannen. Rond 1041 overleed zijn vader en erfde hij Hauteville in de Cotentin en van zijn vrouw. Hij werd, net als zijn broers, beschouwd als een uitzonderlijk krijger.
