- Le second mécanicien est sous la direction du chef mécanicien. Présent sur les navires en haute mer, le second mécanicien est le remplaçant du chef mécanicien en cas d'indisponibilité de ce dernier. Le second mécanicien encadre (dépendant du tonnage du navire , de la puissance et du type de moteur) des officiers mécaniciens et des ouvriers mécaniciens (maître machine, graisseur, nettoyeur). - A second engineer or first assistant engineer is a licensed member of the engineering department on a merchant vessel. This title is used for the person on a ship responsible for supervising the daily maintenance and operation of the engine department. They report directly to the chief engineer. On a merchant vessel, depending on term usage, "the First" or "the Second" is the marine engineer second in command of the engine department after the ship's chief engineer. Due to the supervisory role this engineer plays, in addition to being responsible for the refrigeration systems, main engines (steam/gas turbine, diesel), and any other equipment not assigned to the third engineer or fourth engineer(s), he is typically the busiest engineer aboard the ship. If the engine room requires 24/7 attendance and other junior engineers can cover the three watch rotations, the first is usually a "day worker" from 0800-1700, with overtime hours varying according to ship/company. - Quella di primo ufficiale di macchina è una qualifica professionale prevista e certificata della normativa internazionale di cui alla IMO STCW in vigore ed una posizione prevista dalla Gerarchia di bordo sulle navi mercantili italiane e non. Il certificato di abilitazione (detto anche certificato di competenza) alla qualifica di primo ufficiale di macchina è comunemente detto "patente" per distinguerlo da quello precedente di ufficiale di macchina che, essendo di rango inferiore, è invece detto "patentino". In seguito all'apertura di una procedura di infrazione da parte dell'Unione europea nei confronti dell'Italia (e di altri Stati UE) successivamente archiviata poiché ottemperata, per poter sostenere l'esame di abilitazione a primo ufficiale di macchina presso le Direzioni marittime è necessario che i possessori del titolo di ufficiali di macchina abbiano frequentato e superato il corso di formazione di 570 ore a livello direttivo per il conseguimento delle competenze necessarie a rivestire tale ruolo. - O segundo oficial de máquinas, segundo de máquinas ou subchefe de máquinas é o profissional da secção de máquinas/seção de máquinas da marinha mercante, cujo cargo vem a seguir ao de chefe de máquinas e que assume responsabilidade pelas instalações mecânicas e elétricas de uma embarcação em caso de impedimento daquele. Em Portugal, a função é designada "segundo oficial de máquinas" ou "segundo de máquinas" conforme é exercida, respetivamente, por um oficial de máquinas ou por um maquinista prático. No Brasil, a função é designada "subchefe de máquinas". Em outros países pode assumir designações tais como "primeiro engenheiro (Alemão: Erst Ingenieur), "segundo engenheiro" (Inglês: second engineer), "primeiro maquinista" (Sueco: första makinist) ou "segundo mecânico" (Francês: second mécanicien). - II mechanik (II oficer mechanik) - stanowisko oficerskie w dziale maszynowym na statku handlowym, zastępca starszego mechanika. Funkcję II mechanika zalicza się do stanowisk na poziomie zarządzania, niezbędnych dla zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa żeglugi. W zależności od specyfiki statku może być zatrudniony w systemie wachtowym (nowe statki o nielicznych załogach maszynowych) jak i dniówkowym. W tym ostatnim przypadku kieruje pracą całej załogi maszynowej na dejmance. Ze względu na moc silników głównych stopień kwalifikacji II mechanika określają odpowiednie dyplomy morskie:
* dyplom II oficera mechanika na statkach o mocy maszyn głównych od 750 do 3.000 kW,
* dyplom II oficera mechanika na statkach o mocy maszyn głównych 3.000 kW i powyżej. (pl)
