Tracy Hall, el diseñador del ST-Book trabajaba durante su diseño con un prototipo al que llamaban "Block of Wood" internamente. The ST BOOK is more portable than the previous Atari portable, the STacy, but it sacrifices several features in order to achieve this: notably the backlight, and internal floppy disc drive. The screen is highly reflective. It supports the 640×400 1-bit mono mode only without an external video port. It gained some popularity as being the most utterly portable full-featured computer of the day (slim, light, quiet, reliable, and with a long battery life, even by modern standards for all 5). Jeden z pierwszych komputerów przenośnych, pierwszy tak lekki i prawdziwie przenośny notebook. Jego stosunkowo niska cena – 2 tys. dolarów i zaskakujące możliwości przyciągały wielu klientów, jednak wyprodukowano tylko około 1000 sztuk tego komputera. W stosunku do poprzedniego modelu przenośnego Atari STacy firma zrobiła znaczący postęp jeżeli chodzi o ergonomię, wyprzedzając ówczesną konkurencję o wiele lat. Co może dziwić komputer był dość znacznie zubożony w stosunku do poprzednika, nie oferując właściwie znaczących ulepszeń sprzętowych. Brak stacji dysków w tamtych czasach był rozwiązaniem odważnym i mógł być atutem, choć stał się mankamentem. Zapowiadana zewnętrzna stacja dysków nie została nigdy wprowadzona do masowej produkcji.
