- Das Scutum rostrale oder der Rostralschild, meistens als Rostrale abgekürzt, ist eine Kopfschuppe der Schlangen und anderer Schuppenkriechtiere. Es handelt sich hierbei um die unpaare Schuppe in der Mitte der Schnauzenspitze, direkt oberhalb der Mundöffnung. Damit steht sie der Mentale des Unterkiefers gegenüber. Entlang der Mundöffnung schließen sich die Oberlippenschilde oder Supralabialia an. Oberhalb des Rostrales liegen artabhängig die paarigen oder nur die Nasalia. Der Name „Rostrale“ ergibt sich aus der Bezeichnung Rostrum für die Nase. Wie alle anderen Kopfschilde ist ihre Form, Größe und Ausbildung ein wichtiges Bestimmungsmerkmal innerhalb der Schlangensystematik. Gelegentlich wird auch das der Schweine (Os rostrale) salopp als „Rostrale“ bezeichnet. (de)

Si tratta qui di squame spaiate nel mezzo della punta del muso, direttamente al di sopra dell'apertura della bocca, quindi di fronte allo . Lungo l'apertura della bocca si chiudono la squame supralabiali. Al di sopra del rostrale stanno, dipendenti fra loro, i nasorostrali pari o solo lo . Il nome "Rostrale" deriva dal significato di Rostrum per il naso. Come tutte le altre squame del capo, la sua forma, grandezza e formazione sono importanti segni identificativi all'interno del sistema di classificazione dei serpenti. De term wordt gebruikt in de herpetologie om de schubben van reptielen aan te duiden die gelegen zijn aan de kop. De rostrale schub is altijd enkelvoudig en nooit gedeeld zoals veel andere schubben aan de kop. Aan de onderzijde van de rostrale schub is bij de slangen een opening aanwezig. Hierdoor kan een slang zijn tong naar buiten bewegen zonder dat de bek hoeft te worden geopend. De tong wordt door slangen gebruikt om te ruiken. (nl)
