En 1982, il se rend à Bradford et rencontre Justin Sullivan, il rejoint alors New model Army. Il participe au succès du groupe, grâce à l'album "Vengeance" en 1984, "No rest for the wicked" en 1985 et surtout "Thunder and consolation" en 1989. Suite à de graves problèmes de santé, il quitte le groupe en 1998. Le 4 novembre 2004, Robert Heaton décède d'un cancer du pancréas. (fr)
- Robert Charles Heaton (6 July 1961 – 4 November 2004) was an English musician best known as the drummer in the English rock band New Model Army. Besides being the drummer for the band Heaton was also responsible for much of the band's songwriting, contributing particularly heavily towards the musical content of the album Thunder and Consolation. He was probably the first person to play a synchronous drum and harmonica solo, doing so in the song "Shot 18" on the No Rest for The Wicked tour. Although Heaton was the fourth drummer in New Model Army he was the first to tour and record, featuring on all albums from the band's first, Vengeance, released in 1984, until their seventh, Strange Brotherhood, released in 1998, shortly before his departure due to health-related reasons. Heaton also drummed for Hawkwind for a brief period in the 1980s, featuring on The Earth Ritual Preview which was recorded in late 1983 and released in 1984. (en)
- Robert Charles Heaton, ou Robert Heaton, também conhecido por Rob Heaton (6 de julho de 1961 - 4 de novembro de 2004), foi baterista da banda New Model Army entre 1982 e 1998, quando decidiu se afastar para recuperar-se de uma cirurgia de tumor cerebral. Nascido a 6 de julho, morreu aos 43 anos em decorrência de câncer pancreático em 4 de novembro de 2004. Além de dividir com a autoria da maioria das canções de sete álbuns oficiais até sua saída, uma das maiores contribuições foi compor toda a música de "Green & Grey", considerada como um dos hinos da banda. Ultimamente contribuía com a cena musical independente de Bradford, Yorkshire, cidade próxima a Leeds que adotou como lar, muito em função da carreira artística e vida familiar. Através de um estúdio próprio e de um projeto semanal chamado , dava visibilidade aos músicos locais, além de dedicado ao trabalho-solo (Gardeners of Eden),banda inspirada numa de suas paixões, a jardinagem.
