Innerhalb der deutschen Staatsrechtslehre und Rechtstheorie hat er sich vor allem durch seine von Ronald Dworkin inspirierte Unterscheidung zwischen Regeln und Prinzipien und seine von Habermas beeinflussten Beiträge zur Diskurstheorie des Rechts einen Namen gemacht. He received his J.D. in 1976 with the dissertation A Theory of Legal Argumentation, and he achieved his Habilitation in 1984 with a Theory of Constitutional Rights. He is a professor at the University of Kiel and in 2002 he was appointed to the Academy of Sciences and Humanities at the University of Göttingen. In 2010 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 2008 the Universities of Alicante, Buenos Aires, Tucumán, Antwerp, National University of San Marcos in Lima, Prague, Coimbra, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Chapecó, Rio de Janeiro and Bogotá awarded him the honorary doctorate degree. Graduou-se em direito e filosofia pela Universidade de Göttingen, formou-se doutor em 1976, com a dissertação Uma Teoria da Argumentação Jurídica, e adquiriu habilitação em 1984, com a Teoria dos Direitos Fundamentais. Ambos os trabalhos são considerados clássicos contemporâneos da filosofia e teoria do direito. A definição de direito de Alexy bebe do normativismo de Hans Kelsen (o qual foi uma versão influente do positivismo jurídico) e do jusnaturalismo de Gustav Radbruch, mas sua teoria da argumentação o colocou bem próximo do . É professor da Universidade de Kiel e em 2002 foi indicado para a Academia de Ciências e Humanidades da Universidade de Göttingen. Em 2010 recebeu a Ordem do Mérito da República Federal da Alemanha.
