- Ridge A je místo nacházející se na 73°30' východní délky a 81°30' jižní šířky, zhruba 1000 km od jižního pólu, spadající pod Australské antarktické teritorium. Místo se nachází na Antarktické výšině na ledovém příkrovu a i jeho okolí je na vyvýšeném místě – je ve výšce 4053 m n.m. Toto místo je zajímavé z několika důvodů:
* Jedná se o jedno z vůbec nejchladnějších míst na Zemi. Jeho zimní teplotní průměr je –70 °C a předpokládá se, že může mít ještě nižší teploty než Dome A, od kterého je vzdálené cca 144 km.
* Ridge A má výborné podmínky pro pozorování vesmíru ze zemského povrchu (co se týče viditelnosti skrze atmosféru):
* minimální srážky
* minimální tvoření vodní páry
* minimální vítr – Ridge A v tomto ohledu působí jako „oko tornáda“, kolem kterého stratosférické větry na Antarktidě počínají a kolem něho se tvoří
* odhaduje se, že na místě Ridge A může být obloha třikrát čistší než kdekoli jinde na Zemi a kvalita snímků z případného tam umístěného teleskopu by mohla být téměř srovnatelná s Hubbleovým vesmírným teleskopem.
* Po několik let bylo vědci navrhována stavba druhého Velkého Magellanova teleskopu (první stojí v jihoamerickém Chile).
* Vzhledem k extrémní nedostupnosti místa by náklady na stavbu teleskopu na Ridge A byly mnohokrát větší než náklady na vynesení takového teleskopu na oběžnou dráhu Země. Od ledna 2012 na místě funguje malá mezinárodní observatoř s vědci z USA (z Arizonské univerzity) a Austrálie. Její hlavní součástí je terahertzový teleskop (HEAT – ), který je schopen detekovat záření, které kdekoli jinde na Zemi jen velmi zřídka pronikne až na povrch. (cs)

- Ridge A is a site in Antarctica that was identified in 2009 as the best suited location on the surface of Earth for astronomical research. The site, approximately 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from the South Pole and 144 kilometres (89 mi) southeast of Dome A, is situated in a portion of Antarctica claimed by Australia in the Australian Antarctic Territory. The site is on the Antarctic Plateau at an altitude of 4,053 metres (13,297 ft), and has an average winter temperature of −70 °C (−94 °F). It is possible that this site may have even lower temperatures than Dome A, with temperatures that might as low or even colder than the legendary mark of -100°C (-148°F). Ridge A was identified by a team of Australian and American scientists searching for the best observatory spot in the world. The team leader described the site as "so calm there's almost no wind or weather there at all." Ridge A is a low ridge of ice and has been estimated to have very low disturbances to visibility, such as thick atmospheric boundary layer, amount of water vapour and numerous others. The site represents the "Eye of the Storm", whereby winds flowing off Antarctica in all directions appear to start from a point at Ridge A, where winds are at their calmest. It is also the site of a vortex in which swirling stratospheric winds high up and calm air at ground level combine to make it a place for viewing into space that is three times clearer than any other location on Earth. Researchers on the project suggested that photographs taken through a telescope at Ridge A could be nearly as good as those taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Despite the difficult conditions on Antarctica and the remote location of Ridge A, construction costs for an observatory there that could match the Hubble telescope could be built at a fraction of the cost of sending Hubble into space. For several years, a second Giant Magellan Telescope in Antarctica has been proposed. (en)

Obszar Ridge A został odkryty przez zespół australijskich i amerykańskich astronomów podczas poszukiwań miejsca pod nowe obserwatorium astronomiczne. Jest uważany za najzimniejsze, najsuchsze i najspokojniejsze miejsce na Ziemi, gdzie „jest najmniejsza prędkość wiatru, najczystsze niebo i najniższy poziom szumu na Ziemi”. Grzbiet jest zlokalizowany na Płaskowyżu Polarnym, na wysokości 4053 metrów n.p.m. Występują na nim ekstremalnie małe ruchy powietrza (wiatry), a średnia temperatura zimą wynosi –70 °C (–94°F). Na odkrytym obszarze planowana jest budowa obserwatorium i ustawienie teleskopu, za pomocą którego uzyskane obrazy byłyby niemal trzy razy dokładniejsze, niż uzyskiwane za pomocą jakichkolwiek innych teleskopów naziemnych na Ziemi. O local foi avaliado por cientistas da Austrália e dos Estados Unidos através de dados de satélite como um ótimo local de observação astronômica por suas condições meteorológicas favoráveis: Ausência de nuvens, baixa umidade do ar, localizado sob o olho o vórtice polar, origem dos ventos catabáticos, atmosfera estável e temperaturas muito baixas por volta de -70 °C. É considerado o ponto mais frio da face da Terra, com temperatura média de -70 °C. O Lago Vostok, também na Antártida, chegou a registrar 90 graus negativos; mas como isso foi uma exceção, chegou-se ao consenso que o local mais frio da Terra realmente é a Cordilheira A. (pt)
