Oficialmente, el 100% de los ciudadanos del país son musulmanes, aunque existe una pequeña comunidad de cristianos, principalmente de nacionalidad extranjera. Las dos tariqas musulmanas sufíes más grandes de Mauritania son Tijaniyyah y Qadiriyya.
