- Reginald Leslie "Snowy" Baker va ser un esportista, promotor esportiu i actor australià que va competir a principis del segle xx. Baker destacà en nombrosos esports, guanyant els campionats de Nova Gal·les del Sud de natació i boxa mentre era juvenil. Va jugar a rugbi a 15 amb l'Eastern Suburbs, diversos partits amb Nova Gal·les del Sud contra Queensland, i el 1904 representà Austràlia en dos partits contra el Regne Unit. El 1908, en representació d'Australàsia, va prendre part en els Jocs Olímpics de Londres, on guanyà la medalla de plata de la categoria del pes mitjà del programa de boxa, en perdre la final contra Johnny Douglas. A banda també disputà proves del programa de salts i natació. També destacà en equitació, waterpolo, atletisme, rem i criquet. Baker es retirà de la competició després d'haver estat ferit en un accident automobilístic, i es va involucrar en la promoció de la boxa, portant alguns del millors lluitadors d'Amèrica del Nord i Europa a Austràlia. - Reginald Leslie Baker (Surry Hills, Nueva Gales del Sur, 8 de febrero de 1884 – Hollywood, California, 2 de diciembre de 1953) fue un deportista y empresario australiano. Desde muy joven practicó equitación, natación, rugby, remo y críquet; de hecho, se estima que a lo largo de su vida experimentó al menos 29 disciplinas deportivas.En 1902, como parte del regimiento , continuó sus actividades atléticas y ese mismo año debutó en el boxeo, llegando a ganar títulos amateurs en peso mediano y pesado. En 1906 viajó a Inglaterra para tratar de obtener un cetro de la (ABA), pero enfermó y sus intenciones se vieron frustradas. Sin embargo, representando a Australasia, pudo participar en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 1908 en tres deportes: natación, salto y boxeo, marca histórica para alguien de su nacionalidad. En el pugilato obtuvo una medalla de plata en la categoría de peso medio, perdiendo la final frente a John Douglas por decisión, la única vez que fue derrotado en esta disciplina. A través de los años, ha existido polémica en cuanto a la pelea sostenida entre Douglas y Baker. Este afirmó en una entrevista de 1952 que el padre de su rival —en ese entonces presidente de la ABA— ejerció como juez; y otras fuentes aseveran que, a manera de revancha, ambos se enfrentaron a puño limpio días después del combate en una cena del London National Sporting Club donde Baker habría ganado. Tales versiones son desmentidas por medios ingleses. Cuando retornó a su país abrió un gimnasio, fundó una revista y publicó un libro, siempre relacionados con temas deportivos. Asimismo, adquirió estadios donde organizó eventos boxísticos. En 1919, una vez el boxeo decayó en popularidad, ingresó al mundo del cine y actuó en algunas producciones. Hacia 1920 se mudó a los Estados Unidos y fue productor de películas, pero se dio a conocer más como instructor de habilidades atléticas de estrellas del cine, de manera similar como lo hizo su viejo rival John Douglas. Born in Surry Hills, an inner-city suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Baker excelled at a number of sports, winning New South Wales swimming and boxing championships while still a teenager. Playing rugby union for Eastern Suburbs, he played several games for New South Wales against Queensland, and in 1904 represented Australia in two Test matches against Great Britain. At the 1908 London Olympics, Baker represented Australasia in swimming and diving, as well as taking part in the middleweight boxing event, in which he won a silver medal. He also excelled in horsemanship, water polo, running, rowing and cricket. However, "His stature as an athlete depends largely upon the enormous range rather than the outstanding excellence of his activities; it was as an entrepreneur-showman, publicist and businessman that he seems in retrospect to have been most important." Baker retired from competition after being injured in a motor-vehicle accident, and became involved in boxing promotion, bringing a number of top fighters from North America and Europe to fight in Australia. During this time, he began to act in a number of silent film roles which showcased his horsemanship, including The Enemy Within, The Man from Kangaroo, and The Shadow of Lightning Ridge. In 1920, Baker left Australia for the United States, where he became known as an entrepreneur and stunt coach. He died in 1953 in Los Angeles, California, from cerebrovascular disease. (en)
