The series comprises the novels Nineteen Seventy-Four (1999), Nineteen Seventy-Seven (2000), Nineteen Eighty (2001) and Nineteen Eighty-Three (2002), and the first, third, and fourth of these novels became three feature-length television episodes, Red Riding 1974, Red Riding 1980, and Red Riding 1983. They aired in the United Kingdom on Channel 4 beginning on 5 March 2009. The three episodes were released theatrically in the United States between 5 February to 11 February 2010, by IFC Films. The context of the series uses fictionalized accounts of the investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper, a serial killer that stalked the Yorkshire area of England in the 1970's and 1980's. The name of the series is a reference to the murders and to their location, the historic county of Yorkshire being traditionally divided into three areas known as ridings. (en)

Soltanto il primo, il terzo e il quarto, però, sono stati trasposti in tre film per la televisione, intitolati rispettivamente Red Riding 1974, Red Riding 1980 e Red Riding 1983, andati in onda nel Regno Unito su Channel 4 dal 5 marzo al 19 marzo 2009 a cadenza settimanale. In Italia i tre film sono stati trasmessi in prima visione assoluta su Rai 4 dal 15 gennaio al 29 gennaio 2013, a cadenza settimanale. Ambientati sullo sfondo di alcuni omicidi seriali verificatisi tra il 1974 e il 1983, inclusi quelli dello Squartatore dello Yorkshire, i film seguono diversi personaggi ricorrenti in un mondo violento di poliziotti corrotti e crimine organizzato.
