- Ranulf II (also spelled Rannoux, Rannulf, Ramnulf, and Ranulph) (850 – 5 August 890) was Count of Poitou from 866 and Duke of Aquitaine from 887. On the death of Charles the Fat in 888, he styled himself King of Aquitaine and did so until 889 or his death, after which the title fell into abeyance. Ranulf was a son of Ranulf I and Adeltrude of Maine. He married an Ermengard (died 935) and by her had a son, , who succeeded him in Poitiers. His illegitimate son Ebalus succeeded him in Aquitaine and, upon the death of Ranulf III, in Poitiers too. Ranulf may have been selected as a king by the Aquitanian nobles, for they accepted King Odo of France in 892 only after Ranulf's death. Only the Annales Fuldenses definitively give him this title, saying "Ranulf then set himself up as king" (Deinceps Rannolfus se regem haberi statuit). He is recorded to have taken custody of Charles, the young son of Louis the Stammerer and he certainly did not recognise Odo as king. The Annales Vedastes record that in 889 Post nativitatem vero Domini cum paucis Francis Aquitaniam perrexit, ut eos sibi sociaret. Quo audito, Ramnulfus, dux maximae partis Aquitaniae, cum sibi faventibus venit ad eum, adducens secum Karolum puerum, filium Hludowici regis; et iuravit illi quae digna fuerunt, simul et de ipso puerulo. . . Aquitanos itaque rex ex parte receptos, festinavit propter Nortmannos redire in Franciam.After Christmas [888], [Odo] went to Aquitaine with a few Franks, in order to be accepted [as king]. Upon hearing this, Ranulf, duke of the greater part of Aquitaine, with his supporters came to him, bringing with him the child, Charles, the son of King Louis; and he swore to him who was worthy of it [i.e., Odo], as did the boy... So the king returned from Aquitaine to France [in June] because of the Norsemen. Ranulf founded the viscountcy of Thouars at about this time, as part of a larger movement to create viscounts with powers over regional fortresses to man them against the Vikings. (en)

Po śmierci ojca w 866 r. został hrabią Poitiers. Nie odziedziczył natomiast tytułu księcia Akwitanii. Przyjął go dopiero w 887 r. Po śmierci cesarza Karola Otyłego w 888 r. przyjął tytuł króla Akwitanii. Był ostatnią osobą, która używała tego tytułu. Tytuł królewski Ranulfa potwierdzają Annales Fuldenses. Ranulf mógł zostać wybrany przez możnych akwitańskich tymczasowym monarchą do czasu uznania przez nich króla zachodniofrankijskiego Odona. Możliwe, że Ranulf był opiekunem małego Karola, pogrobowego syna króla Ludwika II Jąkały, późniejszego króla Karola III. Z całą pewnością Ranulf nie uznawał Odona za prawowitego króla Franków. - Ranulf II van Poitiers (ca. 850 - 5 augustus 890) was een praktisch onafhankelijke hertog van Aquitanië. Ranulf werd in 866 graaf van Poitou als opvolger van zijn vader Ranulf I van Aquitanië. In 868 werd hij door de opstandige Bernhard van Septimanië uit Poitou verjaagd en vluchtte hij met zijn broers naar Lodewijk de Stamelaar die toen koning van Aquitanië was. Pas in 878 wist hij Poitou weer terug te krijgen. Ranulf gaf op zijn beurt Lodewijks zoon Karel de Eenvoudige een veilig onderdak en zorgde voor zijn opvoeding. In 882 leverde hij strijd tegen de Vikingen bij Brillac en werd verslagen. Ranulf werd in 887 benoemd tot hertog van Aquitanië. Hij steunde Guido van Spoleto in zijn poging om koning van West-Francië te worden. Toen Odo I van Frankrijk koning was geworden weigerde Ranulf hem te erkennen, en riep zichzelf uit tot koning van Aquitanië. Hij creëerde een stelsel van burggraafschappen om zijn gebied te kunnen verdedigen. In 889 probeerde Odo om Ranulf door een veldtocht te onderwerpen maar Ranulf wist deze aanval af slaan. Ranulf stierf op 5 augustus 890 volgens sommige bronnen in gevecht met de Vikingen, volgens andere bronnen omdat hij vergiftigd was in opdracht van Odo. Ranulf was zoon van Ranulf I van Aquitanië en Bilchildis van Maine. Hij was gehuwd met Ermengarde maar zijn zoon Ebalus Manzer was geboren uit een buitenechtelijke relatie met een onbekende vrouw. Ebalus´ bijnaam Manzer heeft aanleiding gegeven tot speculatie onder genealogen. Manzer is een bijnaam die in Zuid–Frankrijk nog een enkele keer voorkomt, en steeds bij een bastaard. Het woord heeft echter geen betekenis in een lokale taal van die tijd, maar wel in het Hebreeuws waar het bastaard zou betekenen. Hieraan wordt soms de speculatieve conclusies verbonden dat Ebalus moeder van Joodse afkomst zou zijn. (nl)
