- Rakino Island ist eine der vielen Inseln im Hauraki Gulf, einem Arm des Pazifischen Ozeans nordöstlich von Auckland in Neuseeland. Rakino ist eine kleine Insel nordöstlich von Motutapu Island. Sie ist 2,4 km lang und etwa 1,2 km breit und hat eine Fläche von 1,5 km². Die zwei beliebtesten Buchten sind öffentlich zugänglich, drei weitere nur vom Meer aus. Andere kleinere Buchten und Strände sind nicht öffentlich zugänglich. Der öffentliche Kai befindet sich am Südende der Sandy Bay, eine große Bootsrampe am Westende der des Sanford Way in der Home Bay. Das Hügelland der Insel ist von einer fruchtbaren Mutterbodenschicht bedeckt, die durch vulkanische Aktivitäten des Rangitoto entstand. Darunter liegt eine dicke Tonerdeschicht, das Grundgestein besteht aus Grauwacke. Die Insel ist größtenteils Weideland. An der Küste gibt es einige Flecken von Pōhutukawa-Bäumen. Auf der Insel gibt es mehr als 76 Gebäude, zum großen Teil Ferienhäuser. Die ständige Bevölkerung beträgt etwa 16 Einwohner. Rakino ist wegen der wenigen Dauerbewohner, der geringen Größe und des beschränkten Fährverkehrs wenig attraktiv für Pendler. (de)
- Rakino Island is one of the many islands in the Hauraki Gulf, an arm of the Pacific Ocean to the northeast of Auckland, New Zealand. Rakino is a small island north-east of Motutapu Island. The island is 2.4 km (1.5 mi) long and about 1.2 km (0.75 mi) wide and has an area of 1.5 km² (0.58 sq mi / 371 acres). The two most popular bays have public access, but three others also have access from the sea. There are smaller bays and beaches without public access. The public wharf is at the south end of Sandy Bay, and a barge access ramp is at the western end of Sanford Way in Home Bay. The hilly topography comprises a fertile layer of volcanic topsoil from Rangitoto Island that overlays a thick mantle of clay soil which in turn overlays greywacke rock. The island is mostly in pasture with pockets of coastal pohutukawa. There are around 76 dwellings on Rakino Island though the permanent population is only 21 as of 2019. Rakino, with its few permanent residents and its small size, and with a limited public ferry service, has little attraction for commuters. Residents welcome its isolation and privacy. (en)
