- RISC iX is a discontinued Unix operating system designed to run on a series of workstations based on the Acorn Archimedes microcomputer. Heavily based on 4.3BSD, it was initially completed in 1988, a year after Arthur but before RISC OS. It was introduced in the ARM2-based R140 workstation in 1989, followed up by the ARM3-based R200-series workstations in 1990. (en)

- With a relatively small disc and without drastic measures the software Acorn wished to provide would not all fit. So, Acorn introduced a data compression scheme for its executable files. This squeezes program files to half size. When a compressed program is to be run, its compressed form is copied from the disc into memory, expanded to normal size and then run. (en)

- No doubt your UNIX will have the standard Bourne and C shells but will it have the latest Korn or Warwick shells? No to the last two. However, one of the reasons why people want those is because they can edit the command line if they make an error when keying in a command. The workstation will have the much loved BBC copy key facility. You can detach the text cursor from the graphics cursor and use it to copy a previous command, modifying it as you go. (en)
- Two memory sizes are supported: 4 Mbyte , or 8 Mbyte . (en)
- All the Archimedes podules are electrically compatible but need a Unix software driver to work with the R140. (en)
