- Mit dem Titel Fürst von Guéméné (Prince de Guéméné) wurde 1570 Louis VII. de Rohan (1540–1589) ausgezeichnet. Gleichzeitig wurde die Herrschaft Guéméné, die sich bereits seit Jahrhunderten im Besitz der Familie Rohan befand, zum Fürstentum erhoben. - Prince of Guémené is a title of French nobility associated with the fiefdom of Guémené-sur-Scorff in Brittany and held within the House of Rohan. The fiefdom was bought on 26 May 1377, for 3,400 sous d'or by Jean de Rohan, Viscount of Rohan. From his second marriage to Jeanne de Navarre (daughter of Philip III of Navarre) the couple had two children; the eldest Alain became the Viscount of Rohan. That branch became extinct in 1527. The younger child, Charles, was given the fiefdom of Guémené. Charles was the founder of the Guémené line of the House of Rohan. From this line, stem the Princes of Soubise (founded by François de Rohan) and the (descended from Charles, Prince of Rochefort, son of ). The present male line descendants live in Austria, the family having fled France due to the French Revolution. (en)

De son deuxième mariage avec l'infante Jeanne de Navarre, fille de la reine Jeanne II de Navarre, il eut un fils, Charles, qui reçut comme cadet le fief de Guémené et s'y installa. La seigneurie de Guémené proprement dite s'étendait sur les paroisses de Locmalo, Lignol, Ploërdut, Priziac, Saint-Tugdual, Persquen, Silfiac et Langoëlan et la trève de Leshernin en Séglien ainsi que sur les quatre paroisses de Saint-Caradec-Trégomel, Plouray, Mellionnec et Plouguernével, qui étaient appelées la terre du Maréchal, parce qu'elles avaient appartenu au , qui les avaient données à sa fille Louise de Rieux, épouse de Louis de Rohan, sire de Guémené. Dopo l'erezione della signoria di Montbazon a ducato per , il principato di Guémené divenne la prerogativa del figlio maggiore ed erede del Duca di Montbazon.
