- Philip Stanhope, 5. Earl of Chesterfield (* 10. November 1755 in Bretby (Derbyshire); † 29. August 1815 in Bretby) war ein britischer Politiker und Diplomat. Der Adoptivsohn des 4. Earl of Chesterfield Philip Stanhope wurde zuerst privat unterrichtet, u. a. von den namhaften Gelehrten Adam Ferguson und William Dodd. Dann besuchte die Universität Leipzig. In dieser Zeit wurde er 1773 Mitglied der Freimaurerloge Minerva zu den drei Palmen Leipzig. Er gewann die Gunst von König Georg III. 1784 wurde er Mitglied des Privy Council und zum britischen Botschafter in Spanien ernannt, ohne bis 1787 je dorthin zu gehen. Unter William Pitt diente er als Münzmeister 1789–1790 sowie als Generalpostmeister 1790–1798 und Master of the Horse 1798–1804. Lord Chesterfield war Lord Lieutenant von Buckinghamshire 1781–1782. Er war Träger des Hosenbandordens. Er und seine erste Frau Anne (Heirat 1777) wurden von Thomas Gainsborough gemalt. (de)
