- Petru Gherghel (born 28 June 1940) is a Romanian prelate of the Catholic Church. He is the ninth Bishop of Iași, from 1990 to 2019. He was formerly served as apostolic administrator of the same diocese from 1978 to 1990, under the Communist regime. Gherghel was born in Gherăești, Neamț County. A graduate of the Roman Catholic Theological Institute of Iași, he was ordained to the priesthood in Alba Iulia on 29 June 1965 by Bishop Áron Márton. He then served at the parish in Barticești until 1967, followed by a period in Rădăuți. On 1 December 1970, he was named a professor at his alma mater, rising to director in March 1975. On 21 February 1978, Pope Paul VI named him apostolic administrator, with his installation taking place on 4 April. During the following twelve years, a number of churches were built and parishes opened in the diocese, as well as a new seminary building; nearly 150 priests were ordained, with some of them being sent abroad to study. On 14 March 1990, Pope John Paul II raised Gherghel to the rank of bishop, with his consecration taking place on May 1 at the seminary, officiated by Archbishop Angelo Sodano, a representative of the Pope. On 6 July 2019, Pope Francis accepted his resignation, and appointed as his successor. (en)

- Petru Gherghel (Gherăeşti, Condado de Neamţ, Romênia, 28 de junho de 1940) é um clérigo romeno e bispo católico romano emérito de Iaşi. Petru Gherghel frequentou o seminário de Iasi e recebeu em 29 de junho de 1965 pelo Bispo de Alba Iulia, , o Sacramento da Ordem. Depois de uma capelania foi em 1º de novembro de 1970 professor no seminário de Iasi e em 1º de março de 1970 seu reitor. Em 21 de fevereiro de 1978, o Papa Paulo VI o nomeou Ordinarius ad nutum Sanctae Sedis cum munere administratoris apostolicis da Diocese de Iasi por decreto da Congregação para os Bispos. Ele promoveu a formação sacerdotal e conseguiu enviar quase 150 padres para estudar no exterior. De 1978 a 1990 Gherghel foi Administrador Apostólico de Iasi. Após o fim da era Ceauşescu e a normalização da situação da igreja, o Papa João Paulo II o nomeou Bispo de Iaşi em 14 de março de 1990. O funcionário da Secretaria de Estado da Santa Sé, arcebispo da Cúria, Dom Angelo Sodano, o consagrou em 1º de maio do mesmo ano; Os co-consagradores foram o Arcebispo de Bucareste, Ioan Robu, e o Bispo de Munster, . Em 15 de agosto de 1990, o bispo Peter Gherghel lançou a pedra fundamental para a nova catedral Sfânta Maria Regină ("Maria Rainha"), que ele pôde inaugurar em 1º de novembro de 2005. Em 6 de julho de 2019, o Papa Francisco aceitou a renúncia de Petru Gherghel por motivos de idade. (pt)
