- The Petroleum Revolution (Valencian: La Revolució del Petroli) was a libertarian and syndicalist leaning workers' revolution that took place in Alcoy, Alicante, Spain in 1873. The event is called the Petroleum Revolution since the workers, desperate due to living conditions, carried as their standard petroleum-soaked torches. During those days, according to chroniclers, the city stank of petroleum. This situation placed the city of Alcoy on the frontlines of the social conflicts of this era, due to the poor situation of the workers, who organised themselves and were pioneers in the establishment of the International Workingmen's Association (AIT) in Spain. During the Petroleum Revolution, workers seized control of the city for days in July 1873, in the course of a general strike which eventually became a riot against the republican mayor (better known as Pelletes). During the revolt, Albors gave the order to fire on demonstrators, who defended themselves by assaulting the town hall and executing the mayor and trapping the rest of the municipal leadership in the building. The city declared itself independent, and was governed from 9–13 July 1873 by the Committee of Public Health, presided over by Severino Albarracín. The demonstrators declared a series of pay raises and reducing the work day. Finally, the revolt ended with the intervention of the federal army and the military occupation of the city, hefty repression against the revolutionaries, and practically no improvements for the labouring class. More than 600 workers were put on trial, including minors between 12 and 17 years of age. Many of the accused were condemned to death. (en)
- Rewolucja naftowa (hiszp. La Revolución del Petróleo) – anarchistyczne i związkowe powstanie robotników w mieście Alcoy w Hiszpanii, które miało miejsce w lipcu 1873 r. W czasach I Republiki hiszpańskiej (1873-1874) Alcoy należało do niewielu miast hiszpańskich, w których rewolucja przemysłowa była w znacznym stopniu zaawansowana, a rozwój przemysłu papierniczego, tekstylnego i metalurgicznego doprowadził do szybkiego wzrostu liczby ludności i wprowadzania kapitalistycznego systemu produkcji, w którym maszyny masowo zastępowały robotników. W rezultacie pojawił się ruch niszczących maszyny luddystów. Ta sytuacja spowodowała, że Alcoy znalazło się w centrum konfliktów społecznych tamtych czasów, a protestujący robotnicy zaczęli organizować się w hiszpańskiej sekcji I Międzynarodówki. W całej Hiszpanii wybuchały powstania; najbardziej znaczącym spośród nich była właśnie Rewolucja naftowa, podczas której robotnicy przejęli kontrolę nad miastem Alcoy po strajku generalnym, który przerodził się w bunt przeciwko republikańskiemu burmistrzowi o nazwisku Agustí Albors. Podczas strajku Albors wydał rozkaz strzelania do demonstrantów, którzy w odpowiedzi zaatakowali magistrat, zabijając burmistrza i zamykając resztę rady w budynku, biorąc ją jako zakładników na wzór Komuny Paryskiej. Ogłoszono suwerenność miasta, którym przez cztery dni, od 9 do 13 lipca 1873 r. administrował Komitet Ocalenia Publicznego, któremu przewodniczył . Uczestnicy powstania domagali się znaczącego podniesienia płac i skrócenia czasu pracy. Rewolta zakończyła się interwencją armii federalnej, zajęciem miasta przez wojsko i represjami wobec rewolucjonistów, a sytuacja robotników praktycznie nie poprawiła się. Skazano ponad 600 osób, łącznie z dziećmi i młodzieżą w wieku 12-17 lat. Część z nich została skazana na śmierć. Nazwa powstania wzięła się od pochodni naftowych, z którymi chodzili robotnicy, z powodu których w ciągu kilku dni całe miasto przesiąkło zapachem nafty. (pl)
