Créé en 1990 pour MS-DOS, il a rapidement été adapté pour Microsoft Windows. Harris conserve les deux versions. Pegasus Mail a des millions d’utilisateurs et d'utilisatrices dans le monde. Bien que petit, il est extrêmement rapide et riche. Pegasus mail est adapté aux protocoles POP3, IMAP et SMTP. La dernière version possède un filtrage des courriels. Il en existe une version française. Le développement a été arrêté, d'après l'annonce sur le site officiel datant du 3 janvier 2007. À la suite de demandes innombrables des utilisateurs de Pegasus Mail et de Mercury, David Harris a décidé de relancer le développement et la distribution des deux produits (22 janvier 2007). - Pegasus Mail is a proprietary email client developed by David Harris (who also develops the Mercury Mail Transport System). It was originally released in 1990 for internal and external mail on NetWare networks with MS-DOS and later Apple Macintosh clients. It was subsequently ported to Microsoft Windows, which is now the only platform actively supported. Previously freeware, Pegasus Mail is now donationware. The early versions of Pegasus were installed on MS-DOS or Mac workstations on a Netware network, and supported only mail between network users; for external (Internet) the Mercury Mail Transport System for Netware was required. - Pegasus Mail è un programma di posta elettronica gratuito, non open source, sviluppato da David Harris nel 1989, quando ancora i programmi di posta elettronica erano poco diffusi e i pochi che esistevano erano a pagamento. Il programma è nato in versione MS-DOS con supporto per reti NetWare, ed in seguito sono stati creati versioni per Mac e Windows. Oggi il programma viene principalmente usato in tutte le versioni Windows, sebbene sia utilizzabile anche in Linux tramite Wine. Il programma è scaricabile dal sito ufficiale (in inglese), in cui si trovano, oltre alle varie versioni scaricabili del programma, anche il programma Mercury, il server mail, sempre gratuito; link a funzionalità aggiuntive del programma e al catalogo di informazioni, che contiene la risoluzione ai problemi più comuni di Pegasus Mail e Mercury. Il programma, fin dalla sua nascita e per volontà del suo autore David Harris, è sempre stato distribuito gratuitamente, pur non essendo open source. È possibile, comunque, acquistare la guida elettronica di Pegasus o l'assistenza di Mercury direttamente dal sito ufficiale del programma. Nel 2009 David Harris aveva annunciato che avrebbe continuato lo sviluppo del programma solo se un numero sufficiente di utenti avessero sottoscritto un abbonamento annuale di 50 dollari, cosa che è successa. Od samego początku, czyli od 1990 roku, był rozwijany przez jednego człowieka – Davida Harrisa.Program jest darmowy, ale jego kod źródłowy pozostaje zamknięty. Program działa wyłącznie w systemach operacyjnych rodziny Windows, dostępna też jest nierozwijana już wersja dla DOS. Mimo ogromnych możliwości, dużej odporności na wirusy, trojany i spam, oraz bardzo skromnych wymagań sprzętowych, Pegasus Mail w Polsce nie cieszy się wielką popularnością, prawdopodobnie z powodu braku polskiej wersji językowej, zamknięcia kodu źródłowego i konkurencji takich programów, jak Outlook Express i Mozilla Thunderbird.
