Até à mudança de nome, este aeroporto tinha o nome de Aeroporto de Pedras Rubras. Possui também uma estação de metro com o mesmo nome, fazendo parte da Linha B do Metro do Porto. Foi o primeiro local onde o Exército Liberal de D. Pedro IV acampou logo após o desembarque em Portugal Continental. Exército este que começaria a Guerra Civil e instauraria o Regime Constitucional que iria perdurar até à Implantação da República. (pt)
