- Paulo Lins (* 1958 in Rio de Janeiro) ist ein brasilianischer Schriftsteller. 1997 veröffentlichte er sein Werk Cidade de Deus („Die Stadt Gottes“). Das Buch wurde im Jahre 2002 von Fernando Meirelles als City of God verfilmt. Der Roman Die Stadt Gottes schildert die Entwicklung der gleichnamigen Favela Cidade de Deus in Rio de Janeiro, die in den 1960er Jahren als Sozialsiedlung errichtet wurde und mehr und mehr zu einem Elendsviertel wurde. Lins bezog seinen Stoff sowohl aus seiner eigenen Kindheit – er wuchs in der Cidade de Deus auf – als auch aus einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit über Favelas. (de)

- Paulo Lins (born January 11, 1958, Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian author. Lins grew up in Rio de Janeiro and at the age of seven moved to the City of God favela. Lins's parents came from the impoverished northeastern region of Brazil, which prompted him to examine the racial profile of Brazilian society: "Brazil is a racist country and a racist society, but the funny thing is that nobody will admit to being a racist, and that's the problem. Blacks in Brazil are always in an inferior, subaltern position, but you can't find a white person who is a racist." His literacy and verbal skill enabled Lins to begin writing sambas and contributing to local culture, which enabled him to escape the cycle of gang violence in the favela and become a successful writer. He published his novel City of God in 1997, which was adapted into the successful 2002 film City of God. (en)

Ukończył studia na Uniwersytecie Federalnym w tym mieście, w latach 1986–1993 brał udział w badaniach antropologicznych dzielnic biedoty i opierając się na ich wynikach oraz na własnym doświadczeniu, napisał powieść ukazującą realia życia w faweli, w której się wychował. Bohaterami Miasta Boga są młodzi, najwyżej dwudziestoletni, handlarze narkotyków stopniowo przejmujący kontrolę nad dzielnicą. Główna partia książki rozgrywa się w połowie lat 70., a jej fabuła jest zbudowana z kilkudziesięciu wątków poświęconych różnym postaciom z półświatka. Wydana w 1997 książka spotkała się z żywym przyjęciem, a pięć lat później została sfilmowana. Filmowe Miasto Boga było jednym z najgłośniejszych obrazów sezonu, zostało m.in. nominowane do Oscara w czterech kategoriach. (pl)
