Seit 1980 arbeitet er an der Universität Athen, wo er seit 2000 als außerordentlicher Professor für Klassische Archäologie tätig ist. Valavanis forscht vorrangig zur griechischen Keramik und Vasenmalerei, zur Architektur und der Topographie des antiken Athens, antiker Technologie und dem antiken Sport. Zu seinem Buch Games and Sanctuaries in Ancient Greece hat John Boardman ein Vorwort geschrieben. Valavanis ist korrespondierendes Mitglied des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. (de)
