- Pandora und der Fliegende Holländer ist ein Filmdrama von Albert Lewin, der die Sage des Fliegenden Holländers mit der Gestalt Pandoras aus der griechischen Mythologie (in Verkörperung einer „Femme fatale“) verbindet. Der Film wurde von Dorkay Productions/Romulus Film produziert und kam im Verleih der MGM am 15. Oktober 1951 in die US-amerikanischen Kinos (Deutschland 11. August 1953, Frankreich 19. September 1951). Das Werk gilt heute als Kultfilm und besticht nicht nur durch die farbgesättigten Technicoloraufnahmen des Kameramann Jack Cardiff, sondern auch durch die literarischen Ansprüche des Skripts. Der amerikanische Regisseur Lewin war ein ehemaliger, in Harvard ausgebildeter Englischlehrer, der in den 1930er Jahren enger Vertrauter und Privatsekretär Irving Thalbergs bei MGM war, danach als Produzent bei Paramount arbeitete und ab 1942 als Regisseur eigene Filme drehte. La película fue protagonizada por Ava Gardner y James Mason, y también intervinieron , Sheila Sim, , Mario Cabré y Marius Goring. El director de fotografía fue Jack Cardiff. Fue filmada principalmente en Tosa de Mar, en la Costa Brava (España). En esta localidad se erigió una estatua de Gardner en la colina que domina la playa principal. Las escenas del récord automovilístico de velocidad fueron filmadas en Pendine Sands (Gales). MGM retrasó su lanzamiento hasta después del estreno de Show Boat (1951), en la que también intervenía Ava Gardner. - Pandora and the Flying Dutchman is a 1951 British Technicolor romantic fantasy drama film directed by Albert Lewin and produced by Lewin and Joseph Kaufman from Lewin's own screenplay, based on the legend of the Flying Dutchman. It was filmed mainly in Tossa de Mar, on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain. The land record speed scenes were shot at Pendine Sands in Wales. The film stars James Mason and Ava Gardner, with Nigel Patrick, Sheila Sim, Harold Warrender, Mario Cabré and Marius Goring in supporting roles. In Tossa de Mar, a statue of Gardner was erected in 1996 on the hill overlooking the town's main beach. In the United States, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) delayed its release until Gardner's star-making performance in Show Boat (1951) could be seen. The tactic worked, and this film solidified her status as a rapidly rising star. The film is mostly spoken in English, but some characters speak Catalan (the local fishermen at the beginning of the film) and Spanish (the bullfighter's entourage). Artist Man Ray, who was a friend of Albert Lewin, produced some sets for Pandora. He created particular cubist-style chess pieces and several paintings seen in the film, notably the main one, a sort of surreal scene in the De Chirico fashion. (en)
