- Optical Race es el decimoctavo álbum de estudio del grupo de música electrónica alemán Tangerine Dream. Publicado en 1988 por el sello discográfico Private Music fundado por Peter Baumann, antiguo integrante del grupo durante los años 70, destaca por iniciar una nueva etapa de la banda denominada «Melrose Years». Ross Boissoneau, en su valoración para AllMusic, lo califica como "uno de los álbumes más accesibles de toda la trayectoria de Tangerine Dream. - Optical Race is the thirty-fifth major release and eighteenth studio album by Tangerine Dream. Optical Race is the inaugural album of the Melrose Years era, as it is the first appearance of the band on the Private Music label, founded by former Tangerine Dream member Peter Baumann. It was their first album without Christopher Franke since 1971's Alpha Centauri and the band's first to be programmed largely with a computer, an Atari ST using Steinberg/Jones software. The sleeve of the 12" release and the first release on CD and Compact Cassette features a die-cut outer sleeve with a multicolored inner sleeve. "Atlas Eyes" is in 54 time. "Mothers of Rain" first appeared two years before the album's release, during the band's 1986 European tour. "Turning Off The Wheel" was re-released on the album in 1998 under the title "The Golden Horn". "Optical Race" was played by the group on German TV show Wetten, dass..? (moderated by Thomas Gottschalk) in 1988. (en)

Het album bevat een citaat van Lao Tse uit de Tao Te Ching: The visible creates a work in form; the invisible defines its worth. Het merendeel van het muziek werd tot stand gebracht via de destijds populaire toetsinstrumenten/computer Atari ST. Ook Rick Wakeman gebruikte die apparatuur. TD bestaat hier uit een duo, nadat Christopher Franke te kennen had gegeven zich uit de band terug te trekken. Franke stond bekend als de (weliswaar elektronische) "drummer" van de band, toch werd Optical race een van de albums die behoorlijk ritmisch is ten opzichte van voorgaande. Atlas eyes is geschreven in 5/4-maat en bevat elementen van Marakech. Het album is opgenomen in studio's in Berlijn en Wenen (Eastgate Studio). Tijdens de tournee volgend op dit album speelde Ralf Wadephul mee en hij leverde ook een compositie voor dit album. Na de tournee ontstonden muzikale meningsverschillen en Wadephul vertrok weer. De originele hoes was van Monica Froese. Het album is in 2002 in zijn geheel opnieuw opgenomen, hetgeen niets nieuws was bij deze band en verscheen in verzamelbox The Melrose Years. In 2009 verscheen het album uit deze box weer los, wel met een nieuwe hoes. (nl)
