- La Catalunya Vella és un concepte jurídic creat pel jurista Pere Albert al segon quart del segle xiii per a referir-se als territoris de Catalunya on hi havia pagesos de remença, i que es corresponien només al bisbat de Girona, i la meitat oriental del bisbat de Vic i del bisbat de Barcelona a l'est del riu Llobregat. Contemporàniament hom ha usat aquest concepte, erròniament, a l'antiga Gòtia o Marca Hispànica dels segles ix i x. (ca)
- Cataluña Vieja (en catalán Catalunya Vella) es el nombre que se le asigna a los territorios bajo soberanía de los monarcas del Imperio Carolingio Su frontera con la denominada Cataluña Nueva es aproximadamente una línea formada por el río Llobregat y uno de sus afluentes, el Cardener, para seguir por la cuenca superior del Segre hasta las montañas del Montsec. Las tierras al sur de la raya, que permanecerían hasta el siglo XII bajo el poder musulmán, presentan notables diferencias con las de la Cataluña Vieja, sobre todo debido a su distinta organización social, en la cual los derechos de la nobleza sobre el pueblo llano eran bastante menores, fruto de los incentivos ofrecidos por la corona para la repoblación de la tierra, en tanto que en la Cataluña Vieja imperaba el feudalismo. La creación y consolidación de la Cataluña Vieja fue la labor realizada por el más oriental de los núcleos de resistencia hispano-cristiana al Islam, aunque tal corónimo no aparezca hasta el siglo XII para englobar lo que, hasta entonces, es un conjunto de condados sobre los que el de Barcelona ostenta ya una indiscutible jefatura y en el de Rossellón una gran influencia. Katalunia Zaharraren barnean antzinako konderri guztiak sartuta daude, hasi Urgellgo konderritik eta Rossellóko konderria arte. Pallars eta Ribagorza nahiz Lleidako lurraldeak eta Tortosa kanpoan gelditzen dira, azken hauek XII. mendearen erdialdean konkistatutako lurraldeak baitira. Katalunia Zaharra eta Katalunia Berriaren arteko mugak Llobregat ibarra eta eta Segre banatzen dituzten mendilerroen mendebaldean kokatzen dira. Katalunia Zaharra gutxi gorabehera eskualdera ailegatzen den Erdialdeko katalan dialektoaren eremuekin bat egiten du. - Old Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya Vella) was a legal concept created by Catalan jurist in the second quarter of the thirteenth century to refer to the territories of Catalonia containing remensa peasants from the Diocese of Girona, the eastern half of the Diocese of Vic and the portion of the Archdiocese of Barcelona east of the Llobregat river. In the 9th and 10th centuries these territories, like all of ancient or Marca Hispanica had been an area of relative freedom for the peasants. But in the 11th century, as a result of the feudal revolution and the weakening of the noble auctoritas, the nobles began to impose burdensome evil customs on the peasants. The situation worsened in the 12th century, when the nobility used their powers to attach the peasants to their lands, to keep them from fleeing to the new southern lands conquered by Ramon Berenguer IV, and by such attachment turning them into remensa peasants. At the end of the thirteenth century, jurist and Canon Pere Albert wrote his , a treatise on customary law that collected in one place all the procedures and customs currently in force in Catalonia. In order to define the territories where the remensa peasants were, Albert created the concept of Old Catalonia, defining it as Diocese of Girona, half the Archdiocese of Barcelona east of the Llobregat, and most of the Diocese of Vic. Old Catalonia was created in opposition to the notion of , which according to Albert had already received this name in the time of Ramon Berenguer IV in the 12th century. The boundary between Old and New Catalunya was marked by the Llobregat River. Albert discussed the legal situation of the peasants in point 35 of his Commemorations, and differentiated between peasants that were in Old Catalonia, and those in New Catalonia. In the 15th century, after the War of the Remensas and the Catalan Civil War, King Ferdinand II of Aragon issued the 1486 decree Sentencia Arbitral de Guadalupe, which liberated the remensa peasants from the evil customs, thus rendering the concept of Old Catalonia obsolete.
