- The Objective Individual Combat Weapon or OICW was the next-generation service rifle competition that was under development as part of the United States Army OICW program; the program was eventually discontinued without bringing the weapon out of the prototype phase. The acronym OICW is often used to refer to the entire weapons program. It was started in the aftermath of the Advanced Combat Rifle (or ACR) during the 1980s. Like the ACR program, it has largely been a failure in terms of achieving the specific program goals (e.g., replacing the M16) and has cost millions of dollars, but has resulted in many innovative weapons and weapon concepts as well as offshoot programs of its own. Il progetto non ha mai superato la fase di prototipo. L'acronimo OICW viene spesso usato per indicare tutto il programma, fucile XM29 compreso. È stato avviato in seguito all'Advanced Combat Rifle (o ACR) negli anni '80. Come il programma ACR, è stato un fallimento costato milioni e milioni di dollari, ma ha avuto il merito di introdurre concetti e tecnologie innovative a cui si farà riferimento per i successivi progetti. Objective Individual Combat Weapon — целевое индивидуальное боевое оружие) — программа разработки американского стрелково-гранатомётного комплекса, проводившаяся на конкурсной основе в 1990-е годы. В 2001 году комплексу был присвоен индекс XM29 OICW. В 2004 году в связи с недостаточной эффективностью поражающего действия 20-мм гранаты ABM (Air Burst Munition) и необходимостью увеличения калибра гранатомётной части, комплекс был разделён на две независимые системы — 5,56-мм модульный автомат XM8 (OICW Increment 1) и 25-мм самозарядный ручной гранатомёт XM25 (OICW Increment 2), разработка которых в настоящий момент заморожена. Возобновление разработки единого комплекса XM-29 планируется после отработки независимых подсистем и преодоления весовых ограничений за счёт использования ряда усовершенствований и новейших достижений, в том числе, датчиков и электронных компонентов, композиционных материалов, источников питания, керамических стволов, беспроводных разъёмов и перспективных цифровых технологий. Одновременно считается, что 25-мм граната управляемого подрыва позволит поражать помимо открыто расположенных целей, также укрытые цели, — использующие складки рельефа и элементы защитных сооружений и техники.
