Er basiert auf der 1911 veröffentlichten Kurzgeschichte Casting the Runes (dt. Drei Monate Frist/ Die Macht der Runen) von M. R. James. Ein amerikanischer Wissenschaftler ermittelt gegen einen Anführer eines englischen Teufelskultes. Dabei sieht er sich zunehmend mit übernatürlichen Phänomenen konfrontiert, die er als Rationalist auf natürliche Weise zu erklären versucht. Schließlich entdeckt er einen ihm zugesteckten Zettel mit Runenzeichen, der einen Dämon heraufbeschwören soll, und den Hinweis, dass er nur noch wenige Tage zu leben hat. (de)

Es una adaptación del relato El maleficio de las runas (Casting the Runes) de M. R. James, escrito en 1911. La película narra el viaje a Inglaterra de un psicólogo norteamericano para investigar un culto satánico que podría encontrarse detrás de algunos asesinatos. La producción estuvo marcada por diferencias artísticas surgidas entre el productor Hal E. Chester, por un lado, y el director Jacques Tourneur junto con el escritor Charles Bennett, por otro. Inicialmente no estaba previsto mostrar el demonio en pantalla, pero el productor decidió incluirlo usando efectos especiales, pese de las objeciones del escritor, el director y el actor principal (Dana Andrews). El montaje británico de 95 minutos fue recortado a 83 minutos para dotarlo de mayor ritmo. El título del film se cambió a Curse of the Demon (La maldición del demonio) para su exhibición en EE. UU., donde se estrenó formando la segunda parte de un programa doble con The True Story of Lynn Stuart (La verdadera historia de Lynn Stuart) o La venganza de Frankenstein (1958), dependiendo del mercado local. - Night of the Demon is a 1957 British horror film, produced by Hal E. Chester and Frank Bevis, directed by Jacques Tourneur and starring Dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins and Niall MacGinnis. It is adapted from the M. R. James story "Casting the Runes". The film's storyline concerns an American psychologist who travels to England to investigate a satanic cult suspected in more than one death. Turbulent artistic differences arose between producer Hal E. Chester on one side and director Tourneur and writer Charles Bennett on the other. Chester's plan was to show the demon on screen, but Bennett, the director and lead actor Dana Andrews objected. To accelerate the pace and make the film more commercial, the 96-minute original feature was trimmed down to 82 minutes prior to its release in the United States. This shortened version was retitled Curse of the Demon, playing in June 1958 as the second half of a double feature with either The True Story of Lynn Stuart or The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), depending on the local film market.
