- Nevermore, o Nevermore O Taïti, és un quadre de Paul Gauguin fet el 1897 durant la seva segona estada a Tahití. Es conserva a la galeria del Courtauld Institute of Art de Londres. Es coneix per la referència núm. 558 del catàleg de Wildenstein. Una noia tahitiana jeu sobre el seu costat esquerre de cara a l'espectador amb la mirada cap amunt, a la seva dreta. Al darrere hi ha una decoració d'interior amb motius florals, un corb en una finestra i dues dones xerrant a la porta. La model és la seva amant Pau'ura, que Gauguin escriu Pahura. Encara que nua, la noia no té una actitud provocativa. La seva mirada és absent, una barreja de tristesa i suspicàcia pel que passa al seu darrere, possiblement per la conversa de les dues dones del fons. Les línies verticals del fons accentuen les corbes sensuals del nu. A l'extrem superior esquerra té la inscripció en tres línies: NEVERMORE P.Gauguin 97 O TAÏTI. Nevermore (en anglès, «mai més») fa referència a l'estrofa del poema El Corb d'Edgar Allan Poe. Taïti és la grafia francesa, usada també en català a principis del segle xx. O és una preposició usada en tahitià davant dels topònims i sovint incorporat incorrectament pels europeus en el mateix topònim. L'obra d'Edgar Allan Poe era coneguda en el cercle artístic de París. Mallarmé l'havia traduït al francès el 1875, amb il·lustracions de Manet, i l'havia recitat al Cafè Voltaire davant Gauguin. En el seu poema, el corb és un missatger sinistre que té com a única resposta «mai més» (nevermore). Amb aquesta referència i la composició del quadre, Gauguin evoca el romanticisme del món tahitià primitiu i pur que està desapareixent i que no tornarà mai més. El pintor explica el seu quadre al seu marxant: «Volia retratar, servint-me d'un simple nu, el suggeriment de certa opulència bàrbara procedent del passat. El conjunt és xop de colors deliberadament ombrívols i tristos [...] L'ocell no representa exactament el corb d'Edgar Allan Poe, sinó l'ocell del dimoni que mira el rellotge.» Gauguin segueix la tradició europea dels nus. La composició del seu quadre té similituds amb l'odalisca d'Ingres, però amb el seu ús peculiar del color crea un aire simbòlic de misteri. - Nevermore is an 1897 oil on canvas painting by the French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin. Since 1932 it has been in the collection of the Courtauld Institute of Art and on display in the Gallery. It was executed during the artist's second stay on the island of Tahiti in the South Pacific. The enigmatic work depicts a naked Pahura, Gauguin's teenage vahine or wife, lying on a bed in their hut, her voluptuous figure echoed by the curves of the headboard. In the background behind the bed can be seen a raven and two mysterious human figures. The title "Nevermore", painted in relatively large capitals in the top left-hand corner, and the presence of the raven is an obvious reference to Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 poem "The Raven", which was well known to Gauguin and recited at his farewell party in 1891. In the poem a mourning student is visited in his room by a raven which croaks the one word "nevermore" in response to his every question. At the time the painting was executed Pahura was grieving the loss of her first child (by Gauguin). Gauguin had not yet lost his favourite European-born daughter Aline, who died in the April of 1897: Nevermore was executed in the February. The artist himself claimed the bird represented a "bird of the devil who watches". The painting was purchased in 1898 by the British composer Frederick Delius from Gauguin's friend George-Daniel de Monfreid for 500 francs. It was later bought by the British businessman Samuel Courtauld in 1926, who gifted it to the Courtauld Institute of Art. In 2010, the painting was voted Britain's most romantic in a poll organised by the Art Fund Charity. It beat competition from a five painting shortlist, which included masterpieces by Jan van Eyck and Titian. (en)

Все сознательно окрашено в темные и печальные тона, здесь нет ни шелка, ни бархата, ни батиста, ни золота, которые создают великолепие, но только материя, ставшая драгоценной от прикосновения кисти художника […]. Это не ворон Эдгара По, а сатанинская птица, которая всегда настороже. Выдержанная в неестественной, сумрачной цветовой гамме, картина навевает скорее тревогу, нежели сладострастие. Женщина, лежащая на постели, выглядит встревоженной; она смотрит не то на ворона, не то на беседующих в соседней комнате. Стиль письма — густые мазки, яркие, выразительные цвета — словно предвосхищает творчество экспрессионистов. Картину «Больше никогда» Гоген представил на своей ретроспективной выставке, организованной во время осеннего Салона в 1906 году. Работа оказала большое влияние на Пабло Пикассо и Анри Матисса. В частности Матисс уже через год создаёт картину «Голубая обнажённая, воспоминание о Бискре». Рентгенограмма показала, что «Больше никогда» была написана поверх другой картины. Любопытно отметить, что несмотря на в целом гнетущее и тревожное настроение, в результате опроса, проведенного Национальным фондом художественных коллекций в 2010 году, картина «Больше никогда» была избрана «самой романтичной картиной в Британии».
