V roce 2001 byla zřízena statutárním městem Brno, příspěvková organizace Národní divadlo Brno, příspěvková organizace. Jde o vícesouborovou instituci, která se skládá ze tří souborů: činoherního, operního a baletního, přičemž každý soubor má své vlastní vedení a dramaturgii. V současnosti má Národní divadlo Brno k dispozici tři divadelní budovy: Mahenovo divadlo, Janáčkovo divadlo a Divadlo Reduta. Divadlo vzniklo podle vzoru Národního divadla v Praze, otevřeného roku 1881, a zahájilo svou činnost v roce 1884. (cs)
