- The National Museum of Ethnology (Portuguese: Museu Nacional de Etnologia) is an ethnology museum in Lisbon, Portugal. The museum holds in its collections the most relevant ethnographic heritage in Portugal. It is responsible for the safeguarding and management of nearly half a million items. The museum's ethnographic collections are divided into two separate groups. There is the collection assembled by the National Museum of Ethnology's staff dating from the museum's launch in 1962, created by the team who introduced the field of modern anthropology to Portugal. These collections, totaling 42,000 objects, are representative of 80 countries and 5 continents, with greater emphasis on cultures from Africa, Asia and South America, and traditional Portuguese culture. Many of these collections were exhaustively documented through field research, and are inseparable from the important photographic, film, sound and drawing Archives that constituting a significant part of the nearly half a million items that make the Museum's movable heritage. The second set of the museum's collection consists of 11,600 objects from the Popular Art Museum, largely assembled in the 1930s and early 1940s for the propaganda exhibitions promoted by the regime of Estado Novo. They differ significantly from their matching parts of the collections of the National Museum of Ethnology due to the lesser amount of information available, if any, about their origin. Following the transfer of the collections of the Museum of Popular Art in 2007 to the building of the National Museum of Ethnology, both museums were merged in 2012 into a single museum – National Museum of Ethnology / Popular Art Museum. - O Museu Nacional de Etnologia criado em 1965 situa-se em Lisboa, na zona do Restelo. O Museu é o detentor do património etnográfico de maior relevância a nível nacional, sendo responsável pela salvaguarda e gestão de cerca de meio milhão de espécimes patrimoniais. As coleções etnográficas do Museu repartem-se entre dois núcleos distintos. Por um lado, as coleções reunidas pelo Museu Nacional de Etnologia, a partir da sua criação, em 1962, pela própria equipa que introduziu a moderna antropologia em Portugal. Estas coleções somam um total de 42.000 peças e são representativas de 80 países dos 5 continentes, com maior expressão das culturas africanas, asiáticas e ameríndias, assim como da própria cultura tradicional portuguesa. Muitas destas coleções encontram-se exaustivamente documentadas no âmbito de pesquisas no terreno, sendo indissociáveis dos importantes arquivos (fotográfico, fílmico, sonoro e de desenho etnográfico) que constituem parte significativa do quase meio milhão de espécimes do património móvel do Museu. O segundo núcleo das coleções etnográficas é constituído pelas 11.600 peças do acervo do Museu de Arte Popular, reunidas, na sua grande parte no âmbito de exposições de propaganda promovidas pelo Estado Novo nas décadas de 1930-1940, diferenciando-se largamente das coleções congéneres do Museu Nacional de Etnologia pelo menor grau, ou total ausência, de informação sobre a sua origem. Na sequência da transferência do acervo do Museu de Arte Popular, em 2007, para o edifício do Museu Nacional de Etnologia, ambos os museus foram reunidos, em 2012, numa única unidade museológica – Museu Nacional de Etnologia / Museu de Arte Popular.
