- El Napier Nomad fou un motor dièsel britànic projectat i construït per la firma D. Napier & Son l'any 1949. Es tractava d'un motor de pistons combinat amb una turbina accionada pels gasos d'escapament. Hi va haver dues versions: el Nomad I – que emprava dues hèlices – i el Nomad II, una variant de motor turbo-combinat (turbo-compound en anglès) que proporcionava la potència a una hèlice única. Aquesta darrera versió, malgrat un consum específic molt baix (rècord en la seva època), no va tenir sortida comercial i el projecte fou cancel·lat l'any 1955. - Les Napier Nomad I et III étaient des moteurs d'aviation conçus à la fin, des années 1940 par la société britannique Napier & Son. Ces moteurs étaient à turborécupérateur, une architecture très rare dans l'histoire de la motorisation aéronautique. Il s'agit d'une extrapolation du moteur turbocompressé dans laquelle la turbine d'échappement ne fait pas qu'actionner le compresseur, elle fournit aussi un couple sur l'arbre principal, ou sur un arbre séparé. They combined a piston engine with a turbine to recover energy from the exhaust and thereby improve fuel economy. Two versions were tested, the complex Nomad I which used two propellers, each driven by the mechanically independent stages, and the Nomad II, using the turbo-compound principle, coupled the two parts to drive a single propeller. The Nomad II had the lowest specific fuel consumption figures seen up to that time. Despite this the Nomad project was cancelled in 1955 having spent £5.1 million on development, as most interest had passed to turboprop designs. (en)
