- El Monument Volcànic Nacional del Mont Saint Helens (Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument) és un monument nacional que ocupa 445 quilòmetres quadrats al sud-oest de l'estat de Washington (Estats Units) dins del Bosc Nacional de Gifford Pinchot (Gifford Pinchot National Forest). Va ser el primer monument nacional administrat pel Servei Forestal dels Estats Units (United States Forest Service o USFS), el qual forma part del Departament d'Agricultura dels Estats Units (United States Agriculture Department o USDA), des de la transferència dels monuments nacionals sota el seu control al Servei de Parcs Nacionals el 1933. Com a conseqüència de l'erupció volcànica del mont Saint Helens el maig de 1980, el President Ronald Reagan, de conformitat amb la Llei d'Antiguitats, va establir l'àrea protegida el 27 d'agost de 1982 per a fins d'investigació, recreació i educació. El monument no ha patit cap intervenció humana amb l'objectiu de permetre que el seu entorn respongui naturalment a la pertorbació. Životní prostředí uvnitř území je ponecháno přirozené reakci se všemi vyrušeními. Památka se stala první památkou svého typu, kterou spravuje americká správa lesů. Při dedikačních ceremoniích v roce 1983 prohlásil její ředitel, Max Peterson, že „jsou pyšní, že mohou uchránit unikátní období přírodní historie pro budoucí generace“. Od té doby bylo založeno mnoho stezek, vyhlídek, informačních stanic, tábořišť a piknikových prostorů, které mají za účel obsluhovat rok co rok se zvyšující počet návštěvníků památky. The 110,000 acre (445 km2) National Volcanic Monument was set aside for research, recreation, and education. Inside the monument, the environment is left to respond naturally to the disturbance. It was the third national monument to be managed by the U.S. Forest Service. At dedication ceremonies on May 18, 1983, Max Peterson, head of the USFS, said, "we can take pride in having preserved the unique episode of natural history for future generations." Since then, many trails, viewpoints, information stations, campgrounds, and picnic areas have been established to accommodate the increasing number of visitors each year. Beginning in 1983, visitors have been able to drive to Windy Ridge, only 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of the crater. Mountain climbing to the summit of the volcano has been allowed since 1986. (en)
