- Mainistir Bhuithe (Monasterboice) ist eine Klosterruine der Iroschottischen Kirche in Irland in der Grafschaft Louth, gegründet vom heiligen Buite (oder Buithe mac Bronach) († 521). Sie wurde 1097 nach einem Brand aufgegeben, aber der Friedhof wird, wie in Irland üblich, noch heute benutzt. Bekannt ist sie für ihren Rundturm und die drei Sandstein-Hochkreuze aus dem 9. Jahrhundert. Das Muiredach-Kreuz ist 5,8 m hoch. Sein Ornament und die Szenen sind bestens erhalten. Die der Ostseite – aus dem Alten Testament – zeigen Christus, von den Römern verspottet, oben Adam und Eva im Garten Eden und Kain, der Abel erschlägt. Im Westen trägt es Szenen aus dem Neuen Testament. Seinen Namen erhielt es durch eine Inschrift im Sockel, die erzählt, dass es von Muiredach aufgestellt wurde. Das große Kreuz oder Westkreuz ist mit 6,5 m Höhe das größte in Irland. Besonders ist die Darstellung der Kreuzigung Jesu. Wegen seiner Größe sind viele Bilder eingemeißelt. L'abbaye est située dans le comté de Louth, à huit kilomètres au nord-ouest de Drogheda. C'était un des plus importants centres religieux et d'enseignement de la région jusqu'à la fondation de l'abbaye de Mellifont en 1142 qui entraîna son abandon à partir de 1122. Le cimetière de Monasterboice est célèbre pour ses « croix aux écritures ». Il renferme sans doute la plus ancienne croix celtique d'Irlande, étonnamment simple à côté de ses jumelles ouvragées. La croix de Muiredach est connue comme étant la croix celtique ciselée la plus haute (5,5 mètres) d'Irlande. Elle est décorée avec des scènes de la Bible et des évangiles sur les deux faces. La plupart d'entre elles ont été identifiées. Le Christ est en position de crucifié mais sans croix visible. Oggi in stato di rovina, è un sito archeologico di notevole importanza. Il sito contiene due chiese costruite presumibilmente nel XIV secolo, ma non è escluso che siano anche successive, oltre ad una torre circolare in pietra sicuramente precedente. Tuttavia l'elemento più interessante e famoso di Monesterboice sono le grandi e pregevoli croci celtiche del X secolo. (it)

Foi fundado no século VI por São Buite, um seguidor de São Patrício, falecido por volta do ano de 521. Constituiu um importante centro religioso e de estudo até à fundação da vizinha abadia de Mellifont, em 1142. Nos anos que se seguiram, entrou em declínio, tendo sido ocupado por uma igreja paroquial no fim do século XIII. As ruínas incluem uma torre redonda e três famosas cruzes altas, todas datadas do século X. Para além da lista de abades, pouco se conhece sobre a história do mosteiro. Não existem registos de saques viquingues, apesar de estes terem ocupado a região até à sua expulsão em 968. Actualmente, todo o conjunto arquitectónico se encontra integrado num cemitério, não existindo qualquer edifício datando da época da fundação do mosteiro. O local encontra-se classificado como monumento nacional pelo Bord Fáilte Éireann, a autoridade do turismo na República da Irlanda. (pt)
