Die meisten uns umgebenden Dinge und Situationen setzen sich aus mehreren einzelnen Bestandteilen zusammen. Wird bei einer Simulation das zu Untersuchende in seine Bestandteile zerlegt und benutzt die Simulation Modelle dieser Bestandteile und nicht ein Modell des aus ihnen bestehenden Ganzen, werden zum Beispiel einzelne Gasatome zur Simulation der Bewegung einer Gaswolke oder einzelne Fahrzeuge zur Simulation des Verkehrsflusses simuliert, spricht man von einer "mikroskopischen Simulation" und grenzt solche Modelle somit von einer Makrosimulation ab.
