- México y los mexicanos es una obra de e ilustrado por Johann Moritz Rugendas, publicada en 1855. Es parte de las obras consideradas costumbristas, y muestra distintas escenas de la vida cotidiana del país. Una de las motivaciones del autor de realizar esta obra fue la hecha por Alexander Von Humboldt. Sartorius narró las condiciones de vida en muchos de los ámbitos sociales de ciudades como la de México, Córdoba y Jalapa. Como otros viajeros, visitó también los sitios en donde se hacía ciencia en México. Por su parte Rugendas realizó una copiosa producción de pinturas, dibujos y esquemas, cerca de 1400, de los cuales solo 18 de incluyeron en el libro de Sartorius. (es)

It is considered part of the Costumbrismo movement, because of its romanticized realist depictions of nineteenth-century Mexican country life. Sartorius' work was inspired by that of Prussian naturalist and geographer Alexander von Humboldt, whose travels and documentation of Latin America and Mexico were among the first 'scientific' European explorations of what was then known as New Spain. Mexico and the Mexicans narrates the conditions of life for different social classes in cities such as Mexico, Córdoba, Veracruz, and Jalapa. In preparation for publication, the illustrator Moritz Rugendas created nearly 1,400 detailed illustrations, paintings, and diagrams of the materials covered in the book, but Sartorius ultimately included only 18 in the final publication.
