- Mashu, as described in the Epic of Gilgamesh of Mesopotamian mythology, is a great cedar mountain through which the hero-king Gilgamesh passes via a tunnel on his journey to Dilmun after leaving the Cedar Forest, a forest of ten thousand leagues span. Siduri, the alewife, lived on the shore, associated with "the Waters of Death" that Gilgamesh had to cross to reach Utnapishtim in search of the secret of eternal life. (en)
- El Monte Mashu es una montaña mítica por donde nacía el sol, que es mencionada en la epopeya de Gilgamesh. Este Monte era uno de los recorridos para llegar a Dilmún, el "país de los dioses". El héroe Gilgamesh, tras vagar por estepas y montañas, se dirigió al Monte Mashu; para interrogar a su antepasado Utnapishtim, del como obtuvo la inmortalidad. En el Monte se encontraba un sendero de doce leguas, por donde viajaba el sol. Al final del sendero se encontraba el "árbol de los dioses", el cual producía frutos de rica pedrería (una especie de paraíso terrenal). Más allá del árbol se encontraba la residencia de Siduri, la tabernera, y el mar (probablemente el golfo pérsico) que daba hacia las "aguas de la muerte", por donde se llegaba a Dilmún. (es)

È descritta come una montagna altissima coperta da una foresta di cedri di diecimila leghe posta ai limiti del mondo e dietro la quale sorge il sole. Nel mito di Gilgameš si racconta di come l'eroe l'abbia attraversata passando in una galleria per giungere così a Dilmun. Secondo alcuni interpretazioni potrebbe essere identificato con le due catene montuose del Libano e Anti-Libano e in questo caso la valle che le separa corrisponderebbe alla galleria. Questa interpretazione si sposa bene con il racconto del viaggio verso Dilmun ma non si accorda con la necessità che la montagna sia ad oriente per celare il sole al suo sorgere. (it)
