- Manfred Kohrs (* 24. Januar 1957 in Hannover) ist ein deutscher Ökonom, Künstler und Tätowierer. Er gilt als einer der Pioniere der neuzeitlichen Tätowiererszene und arbeitete bereits ab Mitte der 1970er Jahre daran, „Tätowierung und Kunst zu verbinden“. „Er versteht seine Arbeit als Kunst“ titelte die Szenezeitschrift NaNa 1982. Kohrs lehnte es von Anfang an ab, dass Tätowieren eine gewerbliche Tätigkeit sei und gründete 1977 die erste Vereinigung deutscher Tätowier-Künstler. Kohrs war ein Mentee des Frankfurter Tätowierers Horst Streckenbach („Tattoo Samy“), mit dem er gemeinsam Tätowiermaschinen konstruierte und die ersten Piercing-Barbells anfertigte. Er lebt und wirkt seit 1997 in Resse und ist seit 2018 ist in der Tattoo-Forschung tätig. (de)

He was a student of Horst Streckenbach ("Tattoo Samy") (5 August 1926 – 27 June 2001). Together they developed the barbell piercing in 1975. Kohrs invented a rotary tattoo machine with main part an electric motor and an ink reservoir. In 1977 Kohrs founded the first German Tattoo Artist Association.He gave up tattooing in 1990 and began studying economics. Since completing his economics degree in 1996, he has served as tax consultant and Certified Public Accountant (GER). (en)

Il est considéré comme un pionnier de la culture de tatouage moderne et inventeur de la machine à tatouer rotative. Pour faire avancer le tatouage, le tatoueur allemand Manfred Kohrs a dû faire un retour en arrière. Depuis que Thomas Riley a présenté la toute première machine à bobines, l'invention rotative originale d'O'Reilly est devenue une vieille histoire. Diverses itérations de la machine à bobines de Riley se trouvaient dans la plupart des boutiques de tatouage au début et au milieu des années 1900, jusqu'à ce que Kohrs fasse revivre la technologie rotative. En 1978, Kohrs a présenté le premier nouveau design pour une machine rotative depuis près d'un siècle. Sa machine était fonctionnellement similaire à celle d'O'Reilly, sauf que les aiguilles étaient actionnées par un moteur électrique à courant continu plutôt que par des aimants électrifiés. Cette version plus fine et rationalisée était plus légère, plus silencieuse et plus portable. Elle permettait également aux artistes d'avoir un meilleur contrôle tout en veillant à ce que les mains et les doigts de l'opérateur aient moins de crampes. Si certains artistes se sont tournés vers ce renouveau rotatif, d'autres ont préféré s'en tenir à leurs fidèles machines à bobines. (fr)
