- Als Müttersterblichkeit wird von der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) der „Tod einer Frau während der Schwangerschaft oder 42 Tage nach Schwangerschaftsende, unabhängig von der Dauer der Schwangerschaft oder dem Ort, an dem sie stattfindet oder die Maßnahmen, die in Bezug auf sie getroffen wurden, jedoch nicht wenn die Todesfälle auf Zufälle oder Versagen zurückzuführen sind“ definiert. Die Müttersterblichkeitsrate dagegen ist die Anzahl der mütterlichen Todesfälle auf 100.000 Geburten. The maternal mortality ratio, on the other hand, is the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. The maternal mortality ratio is used as a criterion for the quality of medical care in a country.
