- El terme Lingüística Cartesiana es va encunyar amb la publicació Cartesian Linguistics: A Chapter in the History of Rationalist Thought (1966) - Lingüística Cartesiana: Un capítol a la Història del Pensament Racionalista, un llibre de Noam Chomsky escrit amb el propòsit d'aprofundir "la nostra comprensió de la naturalesa del llenguatge, el seu procés mental i les estructures que intervenen en la seva adquisició". The manga was later compiled in Rumic World books, which are available in English from Viz Media. It was adapted into an anime OVA released in 1987. A subtitled VHS release was published in North America by US Manga Corps on April 7, 1993. An English dub was produced by Manga UK. (en)

A palavra "cartesiano" faz referência ao pensamento de René Descartes, proeminente filósofo do século XVII. No entanto, em vez de se limitar às obras de Descartes, Chomsky pesquisa outros autores interessados ??no pensamento racionalista.
