- Khao Lak (Thai: เขาหลัก, pronounced [kʰǎw làk]) is a series of villages, now tourist-oriented, mainly in the Takua Pa District and partly in the Thai Mueang District of Phang Nga Province, Thailand. The name "Khao Lak" literally translated means 'Main Mountain'. This was one of the peaks used by ancient sea farers as a landmark to guide them into the safe harbor at Thaplamu. Lak mountain is one of the main peaks in the hilly small mountainous region (maximum height 1,050 meters (3,440 ft) in Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. The tiny village of Ban Khao Lak, the original beach, Hat Khao Lak, and the bay of Khao Lak (Ao Khao Lak) actually all lie in the Lam Kaen sub-district of Thai Mueang District. However the name Khao Lak has now grown to enclose many other villages in the area, mostly on the Northern side of the mountain in the Khukkhak sub-district of Takuapa district. (en)

C'est un lieu de villégiature balnéaire s'étendant sur une vingtaine de kilomètres. Khao Lak est approximativement situé à 60 kilomètres au nord du pont Sarasin qui relie Ko Phuket au continent, et à 74 kilomètres de l'Aéroport International de Phuket. La station balnéaire est desservie par bus, par taxi ou par « transfert » des hôtels depuis l'aéroport via la route nationale 4. Le nom de Khao Lak vient de la création du Parc national de Khao Lak-Lam Ru en 1991 qui occupe 150 kilomètres carrés et qui entoure les installations touristiques développées sur les kilomètres de plages. Le site est une destination touristique populaire en raison de la beauté de ses plages, de son parc national, de son ambiance calme et en tant que point d'accès vers le parc national des îles Similan et le parc national des îles Surin à partir de l'embarcadère de Thap Lamu. Khao Lak a été pratiquement totalement détruit par le Tsunami du 26 décembre 2004. C'est le site où se déroule le film The Impossible, sorti en 2012, relatant les événements liés à cette catastrophe. Un mémorial situé au bord de la route nationale 4 et un musée du Tsunami rappellent ce que la région a enduré. Depuis ce drame, tout a été entièrement reconstruit et s'est même largement développé.

- Khao Lak är en turistort i Thailand som drabbades hårt av tsunamikatastrofen den 26 december 2004. Khao Lak är ett omtyckt resmål för sportdykare och barnfamiljer. Turistorten är lugnare och mer avslappnad än till exempel det mer nattlivsinriktade Phuket i söder, men det finns tillräckligt med pubar och barer för de som önskar nattliv. De mest omtyckta utflykterna är snorklings- och dykutflykter till Similanöarnas Nationalpark och trekking i Khao Sok Nationalpark. Utflykter till Similanöarna gör man bäst i att boka hos etablerade dykskolor. Vid utflykter till Khao Sok kan man spara en del pengar på att själv åka lokalbuss till nationalparken och boka sin utflykt på plats. Charterbolagen vill gärna boka sina kunder på utflykterna, men detta gör de inte gratis, och de använder inte säkrare eller bättre underleverantörer än någon annan. (sv)
