- Justus von Triest (italienisch San Giusto; † um 303 in Aquileia) ist ein heiliger Märtyrer und Schutzpatron der Diözese und der Stadt Triest (Gedenktag: 2. November). Nachfolger des Evangelisten Markus verbreiten gegen Ende des 1. Jahrhunderts das Christentum in der Gegend um Aquileia. Die Mitglieder der neuen Gemeinde erwartete Verfolgung und Tod. So erlitt auch Justus das Martyrium in Aquileia. Dabei band man ihm Steine an Hände und Füße und warf ihn ins Meer. Trotz der Last wurde Justus kurze Zeit später in Triest ans Ufer gespült und von der dortigen Gemeinde begraben. Ursprünglich war Justus in Triest eine eigene Kirche geweiht, die im 14. Jahrhundert mit der benachbarten Parallelkirche der Heiligen Jungfrau Maria verbunden und zur heutigen Kathedrale San Giusto vereint wurde. Die Darstellungen des Heiligen sind auf Triest, insbesondere auf San Giusto beschränkt. Das älteste Bild findet sich wohl im Apsismosaik von San Giusto aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Hier erscheint er zusammen mit dem heiligen neben Christus in der Mandorla. Berühmt ist auch sein Bild auf einer Art Seidenikone (Seidenmalerei) aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, ein Bestandteil des Schatzes der Kathedrale San Giusto. Die Feierlichkeiten in Triest finden am Folgetag den 3. November statt. (de)

- Saint Justus of Trieste (also Justus the Martyr, Just of Trieste; Italian: San Giusto di Trieste, San Giusto martire; died on 2 November 293) is a Roman Catholic saint. According to his passio (account of his trial and death), he was a citizen of Trieste in Italy, known for his works and charities. When charges of being a Christian were brought against him by his fellow citizens, he was tried according to Roman law. Since he refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods, he was found guilty of sacrilegium and sentenced to death by drowning. According to a local tradition, he was thrown from a small boat into the Gulf of Triest, offshore the present promontorio of Sant'Andrea. On the night of Justus' death the presbyter (priest or bishop) Sebastian was told in a dream that Justus' body had been washed ashore in spite of the weights meant to hold it down. Sebastian gathered his fellow believers and they went searching for the body, which they found on what is today Riva Grumula. Justus was then buried not far from the shore where he had been found. In late antique times the area near Piazza Hortis in Trieste was a cemeterial one and there is a good possibility that the former basilica of the Holy Martyrs at the corner of Via Ciamician and Via Duca d'Aosta was built on Justus' tomb. In the Middle Ages the body of Justus was translated to a chapel adjacent to the church of Mary Mother of God (present day Duomo), attested since the sixth century. When, in the 10/11c, the chapel was joined to the church, the cathedral, though dedicated to Mary Mother of God, became known as cathedral of Saint Justus. He is patron saint of the city and diocese of Trieste. He is also patron saint of Albona (in Istria), San Giusto Canavese and Misilmeri in Sicily. His feast day is 2 November, but the celebration of it is postponed for liturgical reasons until the following day, and thus 3 November is often given as the date of the feast. Early representations of the saint are limited to Trieste itself, and in particular to the cathedral. They are: the silk icon in the treasury of the cathedral, the 12th century mosaic in the left apse, where Justus is shown with Saint Servulus, the Romanesque statue on the bell tower, a series of frescoes discovered in the cathedral in 1959, the miniature in the 14/15c breviary of the Chapter of the Cathedral of Trieste. Oorspronkelijk was aan Justus van Triëst een eigen kerk gewijd. Vermoedelijk werd de kerk als begraafplaats van Justus beschouwd. Deze kerk van Sint-Justus werd in de 14e eeuw samengevoegd met de titelkerk van Maria-Tenhemelopneming, waardoor de huidige kathedraal van Triëst ontstond. De schatkamer van de kathedraal van Sint-Justus bezit een 12e-eeuwse zijden doek met een afbeelding van de heilige. Afbeeldingen van hem komen verder voor in de apsis van de kathedraal, waar Justus als jongeling met de Heilige in een mozaïek is afgebeeld. Ook is er een standbeeld van de heilige geplaatst op de gevel van de toren. Justus wordt vereerd als heilige martelaar, zijn gedachtenis is steeds op 2 november.
